New To Track Days

Hi All!

I am a new track day enthusiast. I've been riding for 3 years since I picked up my DAS, including riding the Nurburgring, Trail riding, Trials, Wheelie school, several touring trips to France and Wales, and a trip across the length of Vietnam. I just can't get enough of bikes hah

Tried my first track day at Brands Hatch (UK) this year and I caught the bug instantly. I've been back for two more days and I'm already planning on getting a throwaway track bike, a van etc. I'm even planning to apply for an ACU license (racing) at the end of 2024.

So... I wanted to get some advice for which bike to choose as a main track bike next year.
I have two bikes and been riding my Ninja EX 650 so far as it has low BHP and I felt it would be a good place to start for learning rather than jumping on my ZX10R straight away...Though I definitely want to ride it on track casually at some point :)

I am considering getting a ZX6R instead as lower BHP than the 10R but much more track ready than the EX 650.
My questions would be:

1. What year should I go for?
2. Should I purchase an already converted track bike or should I find an old road bike and convert it myself?
3. What price range should I aim for?
4. As I eventually want to race, should I get something good enough (i.e., reliable and upgraded) to race with later on or should I worry about that later?
5. Should I just convert the 10R or would that be stupid?

Would appreciate any and all helpful tips thanks!

My first proper track bike was a 2012 zx6r.
If your looking at zx6's I'd definitely be going for an 09 onwards already track prepped.
There's going to be a fair amount of 636s coming up for sale now that bsb has killed the superstock class but will be strong money.

5k upwards should get you a reasonable spec bike, you just need to go in with your eyes open and not expect a pristine road bike but still makes use it's been looked after a any repairs have been done properly...a trackbike has more than likely been down the road at least once in its lifetime!
This will also then be good enough to race, speaking of which whatever your race season budget is add atleast 1 extra 0 to the end! 🤣
This is my old one when I sold it.

Thank you kindly for the solid advice. It is much appreciated :)
That's a good point and just noticed bsb has a new class for 2024 for the Ninja 650...! 👀

Yeh I don't mind if it's been thrown down the track as I will inevitably do the same at some point. But as you say, I feel like it is better to start with something someone else has already prepared and been properly looked after.

How much does a race season usually cost roughly? And is this for club events like Bemsee?

Stunning bike btw, shame you had to sell it! Although curious, the Nissin brakes instead of Brembo? Is that common or do people usually upgrade?

It was sad to see the 6 go but it got replaced with a 2018 10rr 😁

Back when I was racing with no limits around 7 years ago I was spending roughly £1000 per round. Entry fees, test day, 2 rears and 1 front tyre minimum, fuel, travelling cost, food and crash damage.
Costs will be similar for any club that you decide to race with.
A slightly cheaper alternative would be to look at minitwins or the team green ninja 400 class at bemsee.

Stock and supersport 600 rules dont allow the use of after market calipers. Just a change of discs/lines/fluid in stock class plus master cylinder in supersport. Never had any issue running the stock calipers.

the 2018 is a fav of mine! Traction Control, launch control, power modes, wheel control and excellent abs. It’s got everything ☺ although I bet you have the version with an auto blipper included!

ahwell I always tell myself it’s cheaper than horses so it’s okay hah. But still pretty expensive, I’ll likely save some money for it next year. Yeh I’ve been considering mini twins as well, especially as my first ever bike was an SV650.. the Kawasaki team green scheme I think costs roughly £12k for a package deal? I will enquire though as they haven’t posted many details about it.

Ah that explains it then and glad to know the breaks are still plenty for a zx6r.
