ZX-10R Headers vs. Aftermarket System Headers

2598 Views 23 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  LDH
Hi everyone, I recently returned back to my roots when I bought my ZX-10R this year. I have to say this thing is a beast! Anyway, can someone tell me if it would be worth it to get a Full Akropovic Evo II system or can I get the same performance from a Slip-on and link pipe? I've always went full systems in the past, but the headers on this 10R seem to be state of the art and looks gorgeous too. Any insight on the gains of the full Akro vs the slip-on/link pipe combo would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've been wondering the same. I have a brocks predator with the Ti link and it's awesome, but I've heard that coupling that with a good header will be better

I do not have a back to back dyno comparison like I should have done before ever opening my mouth on this subject, but I recently switched from an M4 slip-on to an ARATA Full on my Gen4 and I can tell you beyond any shadow of doubt the difference in throttle response and the extra 20-22mph (indicated) I was carrying down the front straight at Willow Springs was a YUUUUUGE difference!

I made zero changes to the the tuning of the bike the only thing I changed was the exhaust and it was night & day. You also have to understand that I was perfectly content with the M4 slip-on. I thought the bike was fine all around with that, but the Full exhaust really woke it up. I would have never believed it would make such a difference if I had not experienced it directly.

Full exhaust provides better low end gains. Peak hp increase will more than likely be negligible. Buuuut on gen 4 and even more on gen 5 the power is up top so low end grunt is nice

This was very helpful for me. Thanks for sharing! Looks like I'll be going for a full system when the time comes.

For those of you that already have the decat / ypipe slip on. If you check out the Graves Website you will see that that the header they sell will fit any decat system. Looking closely at the design it's very similar to the Akro. Looks like both companies pair cylinders 1/4 and 2/3 The crossovers are located in the same place and the intermediates about the same length.

Speaking with a well known tuner who has tested both the Graves and the Akro. He said that they preformed identically. One thing he did say is that Graves provides a map to flash the Ecu with the system that you download from the FTECU website that works very well.

I would like to see a comparo betwen slip on decat vs full, because all the comparos I see are stock vs full.

I don't have actual dyno charts but when Brock did my bike we put an alien head 2 full system on first. Then we put the stock headers back on and put the predator on. The predator actually saw a few more ponies up top but dropped slightly in the mid range over the full. Both were massive improvements over stock though.

From I have read, the gen 4 headers hold the bike down a bit + the cat and in the gen5 the headers are very very good and what holds the bike down is the cat and slip on.

so gen5 headers are better than gen4.
i wish graves would post the full exhaust from the dyno so we know

for 1700usd a header, just installing it makes gains also increases my testosterone by 50 points.. and gets me a 21 year old girlfriend.

That would definitely be worth paying for! :x

From what I heard for the gen4, is the oem header is pretty decent and since its already titanium, there is no weight savings. The increase you are seeing is from removing the cat. So Any 3/4 system will net the same gains as a full system. That's what I been told at least. Huge increase in power and 35lbs dropped from switching to a full titanium yoshimura system on my 08 ZX6R.

They are good, but a full system is better, similar HP up top but full gives good gains in mid range.
Check the Graves Website site they have the dyno graphs of stock VS decat VS header upgrade. Looks legit
