i flipped the reed valves over, replaced the covers and ran a hose to connect the 2 valve covers since i removed the solenoid. removed the canister and all hoses. plugged the 2 nipples at the top of the tank and the nipple from in between throttle body 2 and 3(i believe). also plugged the hole at the top of the throttle body cover.

i started the bike up and it died 5 seconds later. and now it just cranks over. did i miss something??:dontknow:

Did you re-connect the fuel pump connector when you put the tank back on?
Where you going off BDs "How to"? :dontknow:

Sounds like you may have plugged a vent line from the tank that shoudn't have been plugged :dontknow:
you said you removed a canister so I'm assuming a cali bike.

Did you use BD's how to? very good write up.

To remove the charcoal canister (and related hardware), you’ll need the following:
(2) 1/8th vacuum caps (throttle body lines)
(1) 3/16th vacuum cap for the red tank inlet (charcoal canister/fuel tank feed – 1/4th caps may be applicable)
(1) suitable hose (perferably the hose with a blue stripe) connected to the blue tank inlet nipple and routed inside the RH frame rail and across the backside of the throttle bodies, then insert a 'T' fitting into it so that the OEM tank vent hose & overflow hose can be connected into the other 2 ends of the 'T' fitting so the tank vents properly.

i did reconnect the fuel pump, and i did use that how to as a reference.
Was just responding real fast but yeah, probably would have thrown an F1 light if you missed connecting that connector. Hopefully since you used BDs instructions he can chime in and evaluate your mod.

If you can think of anything or add anything that you did or did not do that might be in question or that was not mentioned that may help as well.

The way I read it, only the red vent on tank gets capped and you said in 1st post that you capped 2 nipples on the tank.

Yeah- good point. You don't want that juice box effect:eyecrazy:

Instant 4 gallon tank-steamlined.

but i got an 04 tank sittin here also, and it only has the one nipple at the bottom left side of the tank. so i figured i could cap both nipples on the upper right hand side of my 05 tank.

Don't know all the details but the 49 state bikes vent gas fumes to the atmosphere (that hissing from cap?) while cali bikes are forced to vent any evaporation/fumes through the charcoal canister. That is why overfilling a cali bike can mess up the char canister.

So the tanks are built differently- you have to do the t thing and connect your overflow and vent tubes to exit via one tube (for a clean look, it could be two separate tubes if you wanted.)

Wish BD was here, but I know the 48 state model Tanks(but also sold in the western US states) have 2 nipples under the right side of the tank. The bottom is a breather tube/overflow nothing to worry about.......but other US models have only one nipple on the right side and is totally different as well but that's not what you got. :headshake:

From what you described you have the same tank that BD had when he posted the "How To"...it appears Maimi was right and you did not do it as suggested.:badteeth:

Nipple with red dot capped.

Nipple with blue dot is the vent and needs teed to other or it's own line.

The "one" nipple on 49 state bikes is the overflow drain.

The 04/ 49 state tank should work no problem now that you eliminated the canister and plumbing.

Nothing to plug up, just connect as normal.

I'm not sure I can help anymore because your not specific...when you sit on your bike that is considered left and right..the right side has 1 nipple or 2nipples and only 1 nipple on the bottom on the left side(I owned both model tanks and that was the main diff)...with the 2 nipples they are labeled by color Red and Blue. Why you keep referring back to the nipple on the left side I have no Idea. If your first tank 05 was the same and had 2 nippled with colors Blue and Red you got a western bike, how living in Virgina I do not know. :badteeth:

Bottom line you used BDs "how to" with that assumption...if that's not what you got and did something different than you need to be more specific on this subject...there are differences in the 04/05 ZX10rs when it comes to tanks and emissions.

The difference is not from 04/05 but cali and 49 state bikes.

So yes your 04 49 state tank is the same as the 05 cali tank when the cali tank is capped at red dot and vented from blue dot.
There is also the overflow vent from fuel filler neck that exits bottom of tank which I assume they both have.

Pic of the cali tank.

that has only the 1 nipple near the base, the overflow vent

either way, looks like imma get back in there tomorrow.
