i have an 04, and want to know if it's better to go down one in the front, or up one in the rear from stock? is there any difference? thanks in advance.

yes there is a diff between the 2 with the 16/39 being the lower ratio. Installing the 16t would be the easiest and least expensive HOWEVER when making a sprocket change its a very good idea to change the entire setup, i.e. both sprockets & chain.
16/39=2.437
17/41=2.411

i was planning changing both at the same time. my dilemma is this. on here it seems that the 16t front is the way to go, but a buddy of mine who has been rding for 30 years and also has an 04 says to leave the front alone and go up one tooth in the rear with a new chain. what will the difference between the two be? i basically want to get rid of the bog.

Heres my suggestion that has worked for me and a few others.
Purchase a 17/41 setup W/112L chain. It will lenghten the wheelbase prolly 10mm over stock which is a good thing and make a diff in giddy up.

sumofallparts is on here, and he has a good ebay store. they are running a special on ebay for 159.00 shipped to your door for their 520 conversion. their ad says they can do whatever size sprockets you want (standard kit is a -1+2 520 chain). i'd check with them.

Well check with our sponsors for your best deal, however depending on what brands you pick will dictate the price but ballpark bout $180-210.

One down in the front is equal to three up in the back, but the smaller you go in the front the faster the chain will wear due to the sharpness the turn you'r imposing on it. One or maybe two down in the front is ok but any more is a bad idea. As far as the back the bigger you go the longer the chain you'll need. If you go one down, two up you can use the stock chain, but it is better to go with all new due to varying wear patterns. 520 is skinnier and lighter than stock but it does have HP limitations.

Be careful what you wish for, cause mess'n with the gears "is" a noticeable thing.

When it comes to these types of questions, BD knows his stuff.

I did the 520 coversion with AFAM's front and hear (and a Speed-o-healer) and chose only to change the rear (40T). I know it sounds strange, but that was late last summer and I'm still getting used to it (less one-handed riding now too).

Now, if you add the 1/5 throttle conversion and the gear change, you'll never be able to let go of the bars.

^ Man that 1/5 throttle conversion takes some getting used to. My GSXR's geared 15 up and still doesn't feel like a 10 with the 1/5 conv.

tj...I am currently running a 17/41 520 conversion combo with the 1/5th.. This is an incredibe difference over stock. I went with Sprocket Specialist for the sprockets and a DID ERV2 chain. I am not worried about the chain as I believe the AMA guys are running 520 chains as well......

As someone stated, with this combo, you will need alot of seat time to get used to it. Especially if you have the throttle mod.

Yep if you buy a speedo healer at the same time we'll do shipping combined and I'll knock another $20 off the total. We sell a lot of these so we can sell them cheap!
