learn, learn, learn........................

If you just go jumping into adjusting things with out knowing what they do and how they affect the bike, then the road to finding the right set up will be long and hard.

Thats why im looking for the best BASE to start from!;) Im just wondering if sport rider might be a better "ground zero" or if I should reset them all as per the manual and start from there? Its hard to get anywhere if you dont know where your starting from!:D Like I said it feels good now, but I have never set a bike up for ME before, so I probably dont even KNOW what GOOD is?! Once I know where to start from Im going to study up on each small adjustment and change them one at a time and see what fits me. I have been searching and studing what each adjustment does, but like I said I need a base!

I would say go to racetech's web site and find out what weight springs they recommend for your weight, the springs make the biggest difference, not that you have to buy new springs but it helps knowing what is recommended, and they give you stock spring weight and recommended spring weight for your weight. After that if the springs are right for your suited up weight. then it goes to setting sag, if you go to sportriders web site and look in the how to's, they have a few stories on how to get the measurements you need to start setting the suspension.

thanks for all the info guys! So I just went out and reset all the "factory specs" all four of the front adjusters were at 9 clicks instead of 10! They must have been counting the first click too? Funny how I KNEW BETTER after just a few hours of research! Haha, and THEY are the TECHS!!!:D At least the rear was spot on the book.

Funny, cause I'm a TECH..... I always count the first click, its a click. Trust me taking one click one way or the other isn't going to do anything for the way the bike feels to you.

Definitely set the sag for starters.
A general base setting for this is around 30-35mm for street riding and 25-30mm for the track. Then fine tune it to your ride taste.

Yea so after I reset the manuals "standard" I took it out for a hour or so. All I realy changed was I took -1 off all 4 adjuster screws up front and I dont know if its because I was so used to it before, or if im crazy but I feel like I LOST some front end feel? It was nicer over the bumps but -10 clicks on all for like the manual says seems WAY off! I think im going back to -9 untill I set the sag first.

Goldfish I donk know what thread I was in (have been reading MANY) but they all said NOT to count the first click? MY Techs must have the same traing as you though cuz they counted it too!:D I will say too that I deffinatly felt taking off 1 on each end! If it had felt the same as before I probably wouldve THOUGHT it felt better, but not the case!:( I have my first track day next weekend and now Im debating even messing with it untill AFTER that. I felt very comfortable on it before, and I dont want to "relearn" the bike in a week! Im just going to put it back to stock untill I have time to learn this stuff better!

Rereading the manual it says "take it out 10 clicks FROM the first click"? To me that says go to the first click and THEN count 10? Am I reading that wrong somehow?:( Either way Im going back down one for now!

The whole concept of there is a magic setting that should be used is complete BS. Forget about haw many clicks someones says or how many lines of preload, IT MEANS NOTHING!!!!

Suspension is really pretty simple if you understand the basics.
1) Start with the correct springs. Nothing will ever be right unless this is done.
2) Set your sag. Again this can't be done correctly without the correct springs.
3) Set the clickers, don't be afraid to change them. Rebound can be done with the "bounce" test. Start with too much rebound damping. Push down on the suspension and observe how quickly it responds. Reduce damping until it starts to respond rather quickly. Dave Moss has videos on utube you can watch to get the hang of it. Then do the compression, again starting too stiff. Go for a ride and reduce damping until to stops felling like you are riding on wooden wheels.

This is now your base, to start making adjusts from. Watch your tires from here, they will tell you if you have a compression or rebound problem. If you see "chopping" on the leading tread, you have a compression issue that needs adjustment. If you have material accumulation on the trailing tread, you have a rebound issue.

Of course a good aftermarket suspension will respond to clicker changes much much better than the stock crap, that will become useless at some point.
