shuttle

we cannot go in them when they are up on the pad. VERY few get to go inside them. But other then those people ,we are allowed around it closer than anyone else! VERY tight security and most cannot get within a mile of the pad when it is on the pad ready for a launch. We escort the astronauts up to the shuttle during the day of the launch and then the NASA engineers or whoever they are strap them in, we pull them back and the countdown is on.
NASA SWAT are not perimeter guards! LOL
they have regular security for gates, perimeters, etc. I use to be regular security with the goal to make the NASA SWAT team. It was the only reason I took a security job out at NASA. I got lucky and had some tryouts and made the team. we (SWAT) have pretty much the run of the place where we want to go. Helo flights, 4 wheelers, beach sweeps, and astronaut protection, VIP's during the launches among other things.
it is a blast! Fun job i must say!

we wear full digital tops during certain days!
Also if we get a call out for something , we wear digital tops with full tactical gear.
we work 24/7 with 3 shifts.
yes , ex army special ops
oh yah, you cannot take ANY photos of the shuttle once it is on the pad past the gate!

THat is really cool man, nice pics. It landed here at Tinker Air Force base a couple of years ago on a piggy back flight. It was cool to see thru the scope I was using, would of have rather seen it up close but that was all they would allow.

I read a technical briefing a couple of years ago. you can not walk inside of the shuttle. The entire inside floor is very light weight. They have special section on the floor they stand on while prepping the inside of the shuttle so as to not damage the inside of the shuttle while on the ground.

The entire goal of the shuttle is to be light as possible due to the cost and amounts it take to bring them up. If cost a fortune to put them up, and any time they have a payload the company that is having the payload lifted pays a fortune in "shipping" charges due to the cost of the fuel to get the payload into space. The less the shuttle weighs on lift off the cheaper it is on the fuel side of things.

Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing. Too bad that the space program doesn't get the recognition that it used to.
