Just trying to get the skinny for when my Scotts Damper shows up in the mail. Any special tricks or hassles involved? I'm assuming no drilling or anything like that? Is it tricky to get the nut off the top triple? Anyone know what size nut it is and does the front end have to be supported to remove the nut. I realize these questions are probably mundane for most but I've come to realize if anything crappy is to happen it will happen to me so I'll do everything I can to limit the surprises. Thanks in advance.

naw, its pretty simple....the front end doesnt have to be supported, but while you are doing it you may want to check the steering head bearings and make sure they are tight....for that you need to support the bike on a stand so that you can have free motion of the steering....El Diablo helped me check mine before installing my Scotts, and it was very loose...You will have to cut the key to give clearance....head nut is 36 mm

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I didn't know about the key cutting though. Must be a tight fit. I'd like to keep the originals intact though, can you get these keys cut at most places or do they have special chips in them?

Not the key cutting thing again. Try this. NO KEY CUTTING REQUIRED. Turn the damper 180 degrees. It will put the larger portion of the damper towards you. It still works exactly the same. No loss in performance or function. AND no key mod needed. I dont have a picture but its an old trick that has been done on several bikes who's keys interfere with the body of the damper.

Not the key cutting thing again. Try this. NO KEY CUTTING REQUIRED. Turn the damper 180 degrees. It will put the larger portion of the damper towards you. It still works exactly the same. No loss in performance or function. AND no key mod needed. I dont have a picture but its an old trick that has been done on several bikes who's keys interfere with the body of the damper.
a Scotts Damper and I'll PM message you when I get it. The install should be easy right? I don't have many tools besides some allens, crecsent wrenches etc.

With any luck, (two years later) he isn't still working on the install :)

The good news is, Scotts is the best, for the real world especially requiring a wider range of conditions. (double :) )

i put one on in less than 10 minutes and ate a burger while doing it.

And Scotts don't leak, like that other brand. But that other brand is prettier, until it starts leaking, then it be a bunch of ugleee.

damn it! i wish i would have known this! had no idea that you could flip 180 degrees. hell i just threw mine on saw that the key rubbed and said fuggit! i got another key:dontknow:

just put mine on after X-mas. took about five minutes and a beer and a half to install

I don't think you can just flip it 180. You have to remove the arm, and reinstall it 180, then flip it and that should require a special arm puller tool from Scotts, though not to expensive, and can probably be done with out it.

But then again, what do I know. Mine fits on straight up with no key interference anyway. So like you said "fuggit!"

Your right JimmyJam, The arm needs to be removed and turned 180, and Scotts has a puller for that. The arm has to be pulled to do seal replacement, or an arm switch if the unit is getting switch to another bike that requires another arm. some people will want the puller, to feel that "just in case", they need it they will have it. Some people will never need it. Some will trim the key if the key needs trimming, some won't need to trim.
Main thing everyone is happy, and has a great 08 (and plenty to cheer about, to see the race winners on green in 08 :)

I'm waiting for mine too and I almost want to have it installed because everytime I try to work on my bike I screw it up. I noticed two dials on the damper do you know what each one does? I had a GPR before but bought a Scotts because most members recommended the Scotts. Let me know how it goes!!:wink:
