Right middle fairing install problem

3534 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  zx214
Hi!

I just finished working on my bike (valve cover gasket + valve clearance check) and after putting everything back together I realized I can't find a way to put one of the bolt on my right middle fairing. See picture attached (I'm talking about the upper bolt in the picture. I made a temporary setup for the lower one to go ride today  but I don't have any problem with this one).

The hole in the fairing goes directly over the head of a engine support bolt... There's nothing to screw the bolt of my fairing.

I looked in the service manual but can't find any explanation. :dontknow:

What did I miss? Am I missing a part?

Tanks!

Can't seem to edit... The upload have cropped the lower bolt. Forget my comment about it. The bolt that's causing me trouble is in the middle of the picture (we can see the engine mount bolt through the hole).

Hey blink. thanks for the reply.

I'm pretty sure I'm using the right bolt (it needs a 5mm allen key instead of a 4mm like most other fairing screws - see picture attached). The problem is not the bolt itself, it's where it needs to hook (I can't screw it anywhere).

I've attached a few other pictures to better explain my problem. You can see the engine mount bolt and where the fairing bolt ends up.

Thanks!

If I recall from my gen 1, the bolt that's supposed to be in that engine mount hole is the bolt that has threads in the head of the bolt for the fairing bolt to thread into. Gonna guess you must have switched it around to another spot? It's been awhile so maybe I'm remembering it wrong but I believe there should only be one engine mount bolt with threads in the head and that's where it belongs. Hope this helps!-Steven

Hi Steven, thanks for the input.

I checked each bolt of the side engine mounts (3 each side) and they are the same.

I'll double check the other bolts tomorrow as soon as I'll have access to my bike. I remember the ones I've used for the frame engine mount (bolts on the frame close to the steering) were different... If I recall correctly, one needed a 6mm Allen key and the other one a 14mm box. I might just have inverted this last one. :dontknow:

In this ad, the one you're looking for is in the bottom left of the first picture, the one with the big shoulder. And in the second picture it's in the top right and you can see the threads through the head. It's been awhile so I don't recall which ones go where, but with the shoulder being that large it wouldn't fit too many other places I'd assume.-Steven

Looked around on Youtube...

I think you're right; I must have inverted two bolts.

While writing the last post I was checking this video :
(check @ 18:20) and I think he made the same mistake I made...

I'll keep you up to date tomorrow.

That's it!

It's exactly the shape of the bolt I've put on my left frame engine mount (close to the steering). I can't believe I haven't realized it had threads in it.

Thanks a lot Steven! :grin2:
