Even tho the OP dropped the question... I'm still interested in this information on my 2016 ZX10R ??I think it does!in the Kawasaki manual I'm sure they say to remove the screen for race use!

The gen 5 stock air filter DOES indeed have a metal mesh screen on the oem air filter.

Hmmm.. So just pull the screen off = Better flow??

Agreed.. Mater fact my 05 Gixer1K actually lost power in mid range with K&N. Went back to stock and all was good with the world.I think oem Nippon supers all have a screen. You bought after market and no screen...normal, if I recall. Aftermarket does NOT mean higher quality. Tough concept for many.
Yeah, pulled mine... bike makes no power still but yay for better air flpwOk.... Thought I'd re visit this thread based on my findings..
I did my PAIR mod last weekend, which of course necessitated removing air box blah blah blah.
I pulled the stock air filter out. Holy %rap! Thats not a screen.. Thats obviously a restriction plate! Upon examination, you can see that it's made to be removed. The screen is snapped and held in about 4-6 places. Just pick one side up with flat screw driver. Pull it up enough to grab a hold of, then start popping it off the pins.
Throw in dust bin.. You now have a performance filter..

Yep for those that haven't seen it leaving it in seems like an acceptable option, but once seen it is obvious it is a restriction and why the race manual recommends removing it.Ok.... Thought I'd re visit this thread based on my findings..
