Can the open element sensor be used with the stock ecu or only on a stamd alone ecu?
Stand alone would be the easiest route. If you have the voltage values for the stock sensor I could tell you how far off it would be, but beyond that you'd be on your own.

Awesome update and nice job on a new record!!

The salt seems to scary for my pussy self to run on, I've heard from a few other people that it can be a very humbling experience like you said, but great you got a record out of it and a great experience.

Dude, it's completely nuts at first, but you get acclimated to it pretty quick (as far as being 'scary'), but the humbling part is no joke! Even with all that it is still a good time, and you get into the competitive groove pretty quick... you just have to adjust your expectations and throw out all that pavement-based go fast knowledge... it just doesn't work out there! :)

Put it on your bucket list though... 200mph out on the salt is a wwwhhhooooooooooollle lot different than asphalt :).

Good stuff dude. Dudes like me may never make it out there (mecca for any race head) so i gotta live vicariously! And my bucket list has become the size of a grain silo. But yea speaking of setup changes - did ya do any suspension changes for that terrain? What tires do they run out there? Congrats!

Yup- MS3Pro FTW! The new bike will be sporting the MS3Pro EVO, for sure. There were a surprising amount of 'Squirters out there, in all sorts of applications. :)

Tires are a hot button issue for bikes if you want to tech over 200mph. Basically any ZR rated tire is good up to 199 in the SCTA's eyes, but they have to be 'race' tires for over 200mph. They define a race tire as anything the manufacturer calls a race tire, but each tech guy seems to have his own opinion... it's really a PITA honestly. Some guys were running race rain tires, and others slicks, and others street tires.... it's anyone's guess what works the best. But for the really fast stuff (say over 230mph), slicks are probably the most resistant to tire chunking/shredding.

Suspension is completely backwards out there. You want it low in the rear, with as much rake as you can manage. Steering damper cranked up, front up as high as you can to get the weight on the back tire. Take the comp damping out of the rear and wind the rebound in as much as you can manage (again, trying to keep weight on the rear). Erin Sills was trapping in the low 200's on a naturally aspirated S1000RR out there, and she has 80lbs of lead shot in the swingarm! Light bikes with a lot of power and aggressive anti-wheelie geometry don't do well out there at all.

Hey there! Good to see you back around! I blame you for getting into this land-speed nonsense to begin with... what with your cool gen 2 antics you posted in years past. I think I have a pretty nasty case of salt fever actually, but luckily i fell in with a local that has the means to get my poor-ass out to the races in exchange for tuning and mechanical work. >:)

Bumped into Guthrie in impound at Speed Week and mentioned you... it really is a small world. :)

Race Wars!

So, I got out to Race Wars first 1 mile pavement event last weekend. Race Wars is a group that has been doing 1/2 mile roll racing for a few years, almost exclusively in Arizona if I'm not mistaken. This event was held at Springerville's Municipal Airport in Arizona... about 7000' up in the White mountains.

The event was nice... mostly cars, and around 10 bikes. The S1000RR and the Hayabusa were well represented, and a couple of Kawi's to boot. The event was both 1/2 mile side-by-side roll racing AND 1 mile standing start. The runway was super nice out to the half mile, and then a little choppy from the 1/2 to the 1 mile. Shutdown was a little tight at 2700 feet long after the mile, but it turned out to be a non-issue with the headwind helping matters there.The weather was clear, bright, with absolutely evil headwinds that averaged a SUSTAINED 20-30 mph by the middle of the day. The real fun was the density altitude clocking in at a cool 9400+ feet, with temperatures nicely in the 70's.

Sadly, it didn't all go exactly according to plan. I had to do a few control passes to 'license up' before I could run the full mile flat out, one pass with an exit speed in the 140-160 range, and then one pass with an exit in the 160-180 range. Those two went well enough at 160.2 (oops) and 178.6, but the bike was getting alarmingly lean... at one point it was 13.0:1-13.2:1 at 13psi! Freaked out by that I turned on the closed-loop control above 7psi and aimed for 11.5:1 and when out to do a full blast. The following pass had a 26mph steady headwind and it went 182 in the half mile... got onto a choppy part of the runway after that, and ended up off the ground over one spot at over 190mph! Granted it was only a couple inches, but the air gets up under the fairing at that speed and it is really spooky. Trying to get back on the throttle in the choppy section after landing just resulted in back-to-back headshake and one sloppy shift, so I aborted the run and went back to check datalogs. The AFR's were in the 12.0-12.2 range, but the injector duty cycle was in the 98% range and the closed-loop correction was maxed out. After the initial "WTF?!?" wore off I brought up the fuel pressure curve and found the culprit: 30psi of fuel pressure at peak boost (13-14psi), and it was an inverse line with duty cycle even with a 1:1 regulator in the system. Verdict: fuel pump or filter was toast, and my fun was over.... and very, very lucky not to have a lunched motor. I'd like to thank ceramic coated tops of pistons and water injection for that little miracle, because it sure in the hell wasn't 91 octane pump gas helping me there.

Overall I was a little bummed, but 180+ half miles speeds in that headwind on a street legal, stock wheelbase, pump gas, 11 year old bike built & ridden by some loon in his garage cheered me up pretty good. I think with some arm and no wind that I might be able to build a 200mph, HALF MILE street machine.... I guess that's next years goal for the 10R. :)

HaHa! Turbos are a blast... with any luck I can get this fuel delivery SNAFU re-worked before the end of the month... there are two open records (with 179 & 181 minimums) out at El Mirage I'd like to go smash. :)

Gratuitous photo op

...snagged a couple of cool shots off the Race Wars FB page from the event... one starting line shot and one half mile shot. Credits to the photographer; they look good. :) The action shot is probably closer to 2500 feet out, so about 170 mph... but the front end is (still) just skimming the ground at 11ish psi.

I do! But I honestly didn't get enough runs in to start testing it.... by the time I got the OK to go balls out the fuel filter had gone tits up. In truth, I'll have to work on that fender a bit... it's not legal for most of the class racing I'm in, and it hits everything with the bike lowered in street trim.... more work to do there!

Fuel Sending Unit Prototype & El Mirage

Wassup folks?!

Came up with a solution to the ever dying fuel filter/pumps. Made myself a new housing that accepts the aeromotive 320 in tank pump AND has a serviceable fuel filter. I even made a little 'sump' in the bottom and ran the FPR return into one of the feed passages for it, in essence making it a mini 'swirl pot' to help prevent the pump from pumping the sump dry when it's low on fuel. It works like gangbusters, but I'm still trying to iron out a good way to seal the wires as they come out of the housing. Conventional sealants only last a few days in a hole that size before they start to weep.... I'm going to try casting a few polyurethane connector plugs and see if that works. Now that I have fuel pressure I can say for certain that my mapping was all sorts of fucked up... that old filter has been getting bad for a while. As a double bonus, my charging system works now!! I guess the little bitty stator was just having a tough time keeping up with all the extra electronics AND a near-20amp constant pump load.... go figure.

On a racing note, we got to go to El Mirage for the last land speed event of the year. For those who don't know, El Mirage is a 1.3 mile land speed event held in a dry lake bed. If you would have asked me 10 years ago if I'd be trying to make 200mph passes on a turbo 1000cc bike on a dirt road, I'd have called you insane. My how time warps us all.... Anyway, racing went well for the team, and we set two records over 200mph on Jay's bike (the turbo harley pictured). I managed to break the minimum/new record for my class, but the SCTA will not allow rookies to set records at their first meet at El Mirage. Boo. My first two passes were control passes at about half throttle, but the last pass (only got 3) I got to let it rip. By then the surface was pretty torn up and I couldn't find a good groove until about 3/4 track, but it did go 196mph once it hooked up a bit. I'm absolutely confident it would have gone 200-205ish earlier in the day with a better track... maybe even more. It was pig rich still (see fuel pump mod), and running maaaaybe 12-13 psi @190mph. It is currently set to ramp from 7psi @ 120mph to 13psi at 195mph in a linear manner; that's about all it can handle on stock wheelbase on pavement without trying to throw me off.

I also got to meet Dsabat out there by chance; very cool dude. :) It was completely by chance, but once he started talking about his own turbo 10 it was dead obvious who I was talking to. The land speed racing community is a pretty cool bunch, and it's turning out to be a pretty small world after all. :) If you're reading this Dean, thanks for taking the time to chat! I appreciate it quite a bit. :)

Air Shifter Fun!

Howdy! Am I the only person glad to see the holidays go?

Back on topic: Shifting has become an issue as this thing gets faster. It has a linear style quickshifter on it now, but somewhat sloppy linkage combined with a sensitive pressure sensor is giving me issue under really high load.... like 4th and 5th gear wide open shifts miss more often than not, and the kill time bewtween gears is too long for my liking. The other problem is my feet: with high speed and acceleration going on, sitting as rearward as possible for aero, and me being 6'2", my feet are actually slightly -in front- of my center of balance.... I need to get my feet behind me to actually hold myself on this thing, or I end up pulling on the bars to stay on it. As it turns out, this is as bad an idea in drag/land speed as it is in road racing, and has led to more than one seat-tenting moment.

Solution: Air shifter & swingarm footpegs! I'm keeping the stock linkage/location to keep it 100% streetable, but I am going about 5 over on the arm to help with traction and give me some mounting room (The bike can't be over 60.5" to stay in the M class I race the bike in, so 5.5" is as far as I can go).

Like everything else on this bike, though, no one makes a bolt-on solution that works or is remotely affordable. Big shout out to MedicB for doing some research on this for the forum and posting it, as well as others over the years on other forums... you can buy the air cylinder and solenoid for under 70 bucks for the pair if you know the right part numbers (shops sell the same parts with their own stickers on them for 70-120 bucks EACH). I'm using an old 2lb nitrous bottle regulated down sane pressures, and using the horn as the shift button (kill times and delays run by the MS3Pro). Bracketing was a shit fest, so I made my own that allows it to be bolt on with no frame mods.... and I wanted it to look cool. :)

With any luck, running 2500psi bottle pressure and regulating it down to 160 will give me a lot of consistent shifts without having to refill bottles, and I can still foot/quickshift it with the horn button kill if it fails. :badteeth:
