New 3/4 Exhaust System.

Hey everyone, got a question haven’t found exact answer to what I’m asking so I’ll shoot here. 23’ ZX10R, just installed 3/4 AT2 Yoshi system. Am I doing major damage to engine driving it without a tune?

Never had a bike tuned before, found a local dyno and asked him about flashing my ecu and disabling restrictions and got left on read, never heard back so obviously felt like they didn’t wanna deal with someone without any knowledge of a tune, which leads me here. Tia.

You should tune the bike for a 3/4 exhaust. The engine will not blow up all out of the sudden but it certainly won't be healthy for the it on the long run and you won't be getting the extra power from the exhaust you installed unless you get it tuned.

Hey Czano, thanks for the quick reply and I appreciate the response. So in other words even if I don’t have the bike dyno’d, it’d still be better for the engine to mail the ecu in for a flash rather than no tune at all. Thank you!
MotoGrower, while it's always best to tune on a dyno with wideband, sending your ECU to a competent tuner with your list of mods should get you close to optimal, and much safer than just running without a tune.

What JAM said.
With a 3/4 system your fuel/air ratio will be off by a decent bit: your bike will run lean which will lead to increased operating temperatures, jerky throttle and will on the long run hurt the engine. It's ok to mail your ECU to have restrictions removed and quickshifter timing adjusted but if you tell them your mods and they try to upload a tune to the ECU no matter how competent they are it still won't be perfect because each bike is unique. A custom tune will have your bike run the smoothest and squeeze out the most power out of the mods you've invested your money into.

That being said a mail ECU tune will definely be better than no tune but if I were you I'd save some more money (custom tune is more expensive than mail in tune) and get it dyno tuned by a competent shop. If you don't have any shops aroudn that tune bikes it's worth to take wake up early on a saturday and travel 100-200 miles for the bike to get tuned: you'll be going back home with a grin on your face in the evening knowing you choose the best option and the bike will be very smooth.

No damage to engine, if ur o2 sensor is still hooked up, just not the power you want yet. Try 2wheeldynoworks.com for mail in flash n packages, I run there flash w no codes runs good. Quick turn nice folks
Did you end up riding it without the tune? I’m wondering the same, have a 23 and installed Arrow 3/4 system and waiting on my Sprint air filter before I send off the ECU. But I want to go for a ride this weekend lol
Yeah I just ordered a Yoshimura 3/4 for my '23 ZX-10R and I am wondering the same. What kind of damage does it do to the engine if it runs lean without a tune and a 3/4 exhaust installed. A shop quoted 1195 for a dyno tune and I think thats a little too much, I dont know what the going rates are. Contemplating on shipping the ECU to 2wheeldynoworks for a mail in flash but also interested to learn how to use the Woolich tune kit. I am new to flashing and tuning so I am keen to learn.

A ride will not blow your engine. Running lean over a long period of time is just not optimal and can decrease engine life. 1200$ seems like a steep price: try and contact a few shops in your area and get a quote. A mail flash will just remove emission restrictions but it will not adjust the fueling of your bike according to your mods so it's not the optimal choice.

I don’t think that last part is necessarily true. I did the Moore Mafia flash and they did adjust fuel maps according to the mods you tell them you have as they will select a profile from a bike they dynoed with similar mods.

Yes you are correct: the key word quoting your message is "similar mods".
Every bike is made different. Even same year, same model bikes may have sightly different engines due to production tolerances and break in procedures. If you add mods on top of that and location you are getting an even bigger gap.

Point is: do this "big name" flashers have a tune available that will improve your bike's tuning? Yes
Will it be perfect for your bike? No: there will be an error due to engine tollerances, break-in procedure, mods, sea level and weather temperatures. A bike that is rode in Florida will need a different tune than a bike that is rode in Minnesota.

It's definitely better to have one of this mail in flashes than no flash at all but getting your bike a custom dyno tune that is specific to its engine and mods and the region your riding in will always be the best option.

Yeah I agree there. Will probably get a full dyno down the line, but the flash is good enough for now
