u building strip only engine or street ridden bike? compression in the mid 13's or more will cause heating problems and resulting loss of power. aftermarket piston kits have raised compression decks, must measure deck height carefully, all ive ever done required a .030 thick hg, thicker than stk. ive done several drop in hi compression piston builds, have yet to make any more power on the dyno than stk piston with good head mill/ tight head gasket. much easier, no splitting cases, no breaking rod bolts loose/retorquing rod bolts, which not recommended, much cheaper. no preference on head once ported, power same. spend ur money on head.
well, used that cam setup before with 13.5 pistons. easy to overcam these engine killing hp/torque. bigger not better from my experience. the gen 3 race int, gen 1 race int, the cheap stk lift web int/ex regrinds, make the strongest power on my head builds. except for the regrinds, stay bone stk gen1/2 ex cam.the 400/384web combowill disappoint u. also require springs/retainers more $$$. can run the stk valve springs shimmed for added pressure with the regrinds saving money. my stk piston 04/04 ported head ran consistient 158 mph 1/4's with the little regrinds. hard to outrun that.
the kaw race intakes are all sold out, have to find used, very scarce. the web regrindsare a mail in/reprofile ur cams service.usually about 3 week turnaround. prices for this service varybetween race stores. been paying around $430 for ones i had done.
been a heck of a summer for anyone building motors or drag racing. work load has been too much for most part, and things just dont flow like they did with machine work or aquiring parts. recentley had trans all 6 gears race cut, installed billet lower 1st gear, rsr auto shift fuel kill, replaced pc3 with new pc5, regeared 17/43 from 15/42.had all inj's recleaned, mocked up engine to measure deck height/squish, had to wait several weeks on .036 custom head gasket to set my squish correctley.and ordered sample bearings to size mains/rods out. sent me the wrong bearings, only couple of races left, might as well take my time. also restripped head and did little more porting in int's, reassembled ready to drop on now.
Gaz I know excactly your pain, it's taking like forever to get what normally takes 1-2 weeks done.
