main source of mid-range dip

Greetings,

Here's a question for the tech-oriented crowd: How much of the mid-range dip is due to software settings to clear emissions and noise legislation (which can be gotten rid of through an effective flash) and how much is due to physical limitations of the exhaust system?

The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to retain my stock headers, and the cat also (but mostly for keeping noise down to non-obnoxious levels), but would still like to try to get some more midrange power (among other general fixes) through a flash. Is this reasonable or would I be wasting time and money try to do this without ditching my cat (and possibly the stock headers)? I've tried to search around a bit online, but the dyno charts I've seen aren't necessarily informative regarding the mods done to achieve them.

Thanks very much for your knowledge.

May want to add what year bike you have as it will change the answer.

Oops, sorry thought I posted in the Gen5 section... 2016 ZX10R
If it's a North America bike it'll gain a little power from just flash down low. I'm debating leaving on the cat to keep it quiet as well. Obv better if removed but it's a noise trade off
Contact Nels at Two Wheel Dyno Works. He is very knowledgable about the gen 5. The flash alone will eliminate your issues. I had mine done by him and it is so nice. Plus auto blip down shifts.
Fair enough, turtle1000, that's what I was thinking.

And thanks for the reference, obijack. I was thinking about getting the Woolich setup for the auto-tune capabilities, but I'll check into Two Wheel Dyno Works regarding the flash.
there is no real mid range dip or whatever. Get rid of the cat but keep it. Plenty of quiet cans to select a quiet can.
If you have access to a reputable local tuner or can tune yourself i'd go with woolich. If your like me and have no desire to try and tune a $16,000 bike, and no local tuners, an ecu flash is in order.
Run 002 = 100% bone stock 2016 /w just a few hundred miles on it
Run 009 = 100% bone stock 2016 tuning just the air fuel mix
Run 021 = 2016 removing entire stock exhaust system and fitting Akrapovic Evolution full race system, adjusting only the ETV mapping and Ignition timing values (zero fuel adjustments were made from the stock fuel values). Adjusting the fueling, leaning it out would net me another consistent 3-5HP/1-2TQ throughout the rev range from bottom to top.
Same bike, same dyno all within 24 hours.

If I do the Carbon akra slip on I pray for half these gains..

Wow. Very impressive!!!

Nels is the man! He does great work! See him for sure.
the trick is the expensive exhaust...
that is what the dyno is telling.

That evo really shines from 5-10k I doubt a slip would make that much power there. Up top slips do good I've noticed

That graph is very telling, indeed. Thanks so much for sharing!
Don't look at graphs but watch the green flag drop. When that happens the bullshit stops. Trust me.
