I know someone probably already asked but, I want to lower the rear an inch. 2 questions 1: recommend a brand?
2: if I lower the rear an inch do I have to do anything to the front :dontknow:

I have 2 questions for you:

1. Why are you lowering (i.e drag strip/better height for you.etc.)?

2. What kind of riding do you do?

Oh, and Muzzy lowering links from Ryan Schnitz site(sponsor) should do the trick to lower in the rear and you get a 10percent discount for being a member.

I just want a better height

Ok, then you got the info on where to buy, and not an expert at all for the street setup and sure you will get others to chime in but I have read allot about this subject and from what I do know you will need to lower the front end as well. Get your lowering links first and read all you can about this subject, as far as how much in the front(which I believe in your case to be equal distance). I am also getting ready to buy adjustable links from Schnitz racing and so I could also sell you my dog bones cheap if your not in a hurry, they lower the rear 1" or 3"s, your choice :thumbsup:

thanks bluedevil! Ill do some more research and let you know. I'm in no hurry. I really don't want to screw up the handling too much

^^^I may be wrong, but I think it will be the opposite. With the rear lowered and the front at stock height, the bike won't turn as quick because it's kind of like a chopper. This will also cause the front end to push when accelerating out of corners.

Hmmm. When mine was 2 1/2" lowered in the rear and stock up front, it turned extremely fast. There is another thread on raising the front and leaving the stock height out back to get faster turn in. Same thing.

I think that it's all in rider preference. I hated mine lowered but lowering it did what I needed it to " straight line stability and launch capability" But when riding hard and turning it wasn't too much fun. But I had mine slammed so results may be different with yours. I know some guys who swear by it and only ride their bikes lowered but they only drag race and the most riding other than that is riding to the race. But Try it out and see if you like it, it's easy to change back.

As for tire swaps, some tires have a taller profile or aspect ratio than others, and some have rounder profiles than others. It all makes a difference. Taller in front gives you more trail (because it raises the front). Taller in back gets you less trail.

Racers typically decrease trail over stock by lowering the front end (raising the fork tubes in the clamps), raising the back end (less common), using a rear tire with a taller aspect ratio than stock, or some combination thereof. Of course, then you need a steering damper to stabilize the bike. Fancy rigs will have adjustable swingarm pivots (for changing anti-squat, etc.) and adjustable steering offset.

Another factor that affects front-end stability is the wear pattern on the front tire. A squared profile will have a natural oscillation frequency much lower than a round tire. The engineers will typically set up the bike so that the natural oscillation frequencies are high enough to be damped out naturally.

Sidewall stiffness also makes a big difference, just as underinflating the tires will destabilize the bike.

Sooooooo many variables. It's no wonder the top racers always bring their crew with them.

That's why In Vol's case who brought up this tread, I told him he will have to also lower the front as well as he just wants the bike lower for his own personal height prefererance.

Now, to me it seems the only question is if lowering the rear(adding trail) is a 1 to 1 realationship in lowering the front(raising the fork tubes in the clamps) to get back to stock trail?

I personally think it will have something to do with the rake of the front and other factors, almost with some sort of formula to get back to stock trail. :dontknow: but if someone has info. it would be appreciated by Vol, myself and others :thumbsup:

I posted a thread lately with the same question. I only need the bike lowered about an inch or so for my "short" legs. I want to retain the cornering ability it has and I don't drag race. I have an Ohlins shock with alittle height adjustment so with a 1" lowered link in the back I can raise or lower about a 1/4" from that with my shock.

Just wanted to know how far to raise the tubes in the front to keep the geometry as close as it is now.

im short too and i thought it in my best interest to lower my bike when i first got it. Ive spent the last 6 mos looking for stock dogbones on ebay to correct my mistake. id rather be tiptoeing the ground at stop signs than have my bike lowered again. it was terrible and ruined the handling. To answer your question if you lower it an inch in the back like everyone's saying youll have to lower it an inch in the front; your handling and turn-in speed will be awful if you lower the back and not the front, i initially made that mistake. If you are gonna lower the rear i have a set of 3 posititon dogbones i would sale cheap just to get rid of. hope that helps just my .02

Sorry you missed another thread I responded to and maybe should have updated this one, but your right. If you lower the back then the front should be the same if you want close to stock handling after some research I learned, but it wasn't a priority for me because I have been drag racing, but glad you found that out anyway. :thumbsup:

When I bought my bike in May of 05, I had it lowered 3 inches. I am 5'8" so I was really nervous about toe tappin with my new toy. The dealership told me that you have to lower the front the same as the rear to keep any semblance of handling. I now am raising it up 2" to get some clearance for the belly pan. I have oe bones for an 05 if anyone needs them, they are brand new as it was never ridden with them on.
