Its something i can't hear while riding (with or without earplugs).

The 1st gen's have a whine to them. It's normal.

I've had this bike since 1k miles (18k now) and i've never noticed a whine this pronounced. I know there is and has always been a little whine, this just seems like something more significant.

I believe the sound comes from the cam chain. Since the factory tensioner is automatic, it probably tightened itself so you can hear it more.
