I was helping a buddy of mine today put extensions and 520 sprockets on his 04 10r. We got everything put back together and tighten, BUT his RK chain he ordered(130 link) was too short. The local shop cant order a 520 chain more than 130 links. One guy said to buy another chain and link together, the other said its a bad idea. Any ideas? Know anyone who has done this? OR where a chain can be ordered cut to fit. ANY help greatly appreciated, THANKS GUYS!

How much of an extension did you guys put on his bike?

I think 7-10 adjustable. Its at the shortest point now, and about 5 or 6 links short

Rivited master links. The chain integrity doesn't give a big rats ass if there is one master link or two master links.

Clip Master links can't be trusted though.

Send the 130 chain back and get a 140 link chain from DID with a rivet link(they do make it, a 520VM). The problem is not a lot of people make 120 link + chains in 520.

sounds like the way to go, order it then walk into the guys who wouldnt do it for you with the longer chain.

and i have never run an extension, but i normally run 2 masters on track bikes so i can play with length easy. never had an issue. i have however had a shop put a clip type master on backwards, hit 7k rpm and it broke my case.

I wouldn't run more than 1 master link, but thats just me. If I wouldn't do it on my own bike I sure wouldn't do it to a customers.

If he put this much work into an extension don't skimp on the chain. Get a high quality chain and rivet link (I wouldn't put a clip link on my Radio Flyer much less any bike) don't make some "chop shop" chain when you can do it right.

We looked online and called numerous places, nowhere had a 520 chain more than 130 links. Anyone have a website? We got an RK GB520GXW with rivot style link, so its a quality chain, just short. Where did you find this DID 140?

He is full of shit all your doing in putting in more links { and thats all a chain is is a bunch of links!}:badteeth: we do it all the time on race bikes and they see more tensile stress then any street bike will!,,,,,, thats just someone trying to sell you a $140 chain

I'm guessing the EK 520 ZZZ Tensile Strength - 9,400 lb.

I run two links all the time so i can change the wheelbase of the bike easily although I dont think i would run a 520 chain on an extended bike at the track just for the reason that if it were to break it could take out the cases and it really isnt going to be a noticable difference in power. :thumbsup:
