I cant find a law online to save my life. An officer stopped me last night for what I suspect was to see if I had been drinking and sighted an obscured license plate as the reason. No ticket was issued so I think he was full of shit. Anyway it is side mounted really low but easy to read from the rear which he agreed with. The issue he stated was he couldn't see it from the right side of the vehicle. With new Harley Davidson Nightsters being sold with side mounts how do you draw the line with what is legal?:machinegu:donkey1:

Definitely illegal here in Florida. But like 9r said I think they got ya on that one unfortunately. Unless you can find somewhere that it says you can have your plate mounted anywhere as long as It's visible and well lit.

Thats the problem. I have 6 hours of research in this and I cannot find anything that says I cant have a side mount plate or hight requirement anywhere... I know I am not that stupid, that I could spend 6 hours looking for a law or guideline and not stumble across it.:lame:

If it was a harley you would be alright. Sporty looking bikes and cars will always draw attention. In my area now, if the bike has a tag forward of the rear axle, no red reflectors on the rear, tag at an angle, or no light on the tag you will not pass inspection (if yours is a sports bike). Harleys can still do the swing arm mounts with no lights and pass somehow. Hmmmmm

Whats up bro, dont know if you remember me but I met you at Andy's. I have a black 08 ZX10R. As far as your license plate, its just how it is over here. They were definitely messing with you and just trying to find anything wrong. Being born and raised here, I have been messed with too many times to list. They pull you over for one reason and then find something else to gig you on. Ive had my license mounted like this for the past year and have been lucky so far (knock on wood). I think the only thing I have going for me is that I have a LED light that shines bright over the whole plate.

What up man? bike still looks good I see. Hit me up for a ride sometime. the problem I am having with all this is if he had hit me on anything else I could have slapped him with the regs on motorcycles verbatim but there is no clarification on the license plate thing for hawaii. I've went so far as to call 2 shops this morning and they have both told me that the HPD Sergeant was talking from his ass. Im not saying he was racist but every time a cop pulls me over for no apparent reason its a local boy cop and they treat me like shit. In fact I have never been pulled over by a cop that wasn't local... My fault for living west side.:jerkit:

You said it. Unfortunately, it is the local mentality. Especially on the leeward side. How far down do you live, Maili? I live in Honokai Hale. It s the subdivision all by itself(on the left side of the freeway) right after the Campbell Industrial Park exit and just before the KoOlina exit as you're driving towards the west side. Maybe we could hit KoleKole pass someday.

The side plate rotated 90 degrees may be the issue. Yes, the Harley you mentioned has a side plate, but it designed to be read upright.

I have a friend who got a ticket in TN not for the plate being on the side, but being rotated as your plate was.

Note that in TN now you also cannot have a clear cover plate over your plate. Why? Because some people intentionally "modified" the clear covers with illusive properties to avoid ID. For those of us who like clean license plates, a very small minority ruined an innocent option.

As a side note...not to hijack a thread, but someone can start a new thread along these lines if they wish...Wheeling, stunting, and aggressive driving in traffic make it more difficult to sell legislatures on keeping our privileges. Who knows, the person you wheelie, stunt, zipped by aggressively, or had loud pipes near may have connections with legislatures, law enforcement, or lobbyists who can influence laws a direction we'd rather them not go.

Yes, I've done some silly things myself. Just wanted to present a philosophical viewpoint to consider for those of us who love straddling that awesome horsepower.

How that plate is mounted it is completely illegal. First it is in a vertical mounted position which the last time I checked was illegal for your state. Even here in Florida after June 16th, 2009 a tag being in a vertical mounted position can still not obstruct the view of the tag or hence it will be illegal and you will be cited for it. Really any tag that isn't in the middle of your motorcycles tail can be classified as an improperly mounted tag or obstructing the view due to the point you can only see it from one side. But I can completely agree with the officer on pulling you over. I say invest in a couple L brackets and call it a day in less you really love getting pulled over all the time.

I would love to see that law. Does not exist in hawaii. And if thats the law then how does harley get away with it stock? ( That is it on the left. You can just see it behind the fender.)

We'll first off if your going to answer a question with another question then try to answer your own question referring to the harley :bs::thefinger. But if I saw that I would pull them over!! Its obstructing the view of the tag regardless if mounted horizontal due to the fact its on one side, hence what if I were on the right side of the vehicle. But in my mind set I don't waste my time with stupid traffic stops like these BUT SOME OFFICERS DO. I was an mp and have gone threw all the necessary programs to become an officer, just waiting for a union to pick me up and papers to be processed. But there is a fine line of being a good officer and being a complete tool. Any officer along with a buddy of mine that's a palm beach county sheriff rarely wastes ones time for improper mounting of tags in less its a flip tag or something hidden or tucked up under the tail

I have no ideal how Harley is getting away!!!

I know I've said it before, but crap like this is why on all of my bikes, I leave lighting, reflectors, license plate, mudguard etc all STOCK. And I either use a stock muffler or a quiet aftermarket one. Wayyyyyy less of the wrong kind of attention like this.

"How can Harley get away with this" simple, they are the OEM manufacturer and they declare that what they are building meets the requirements of the FMVSS (USA) or CMVSS (Canada) or whole-vehicle type approval (most of the rest of the world). If what you have on your bike is how the original manufacturer built it then (A) it should never be a problem in the first place, and (B) if it is a problem, it is easy to beat in court and if you do it right, you can make the officer look silly for ever having questioned it, which hopefully means that he won't question it again.

If you modify something on your bike then it is up to YOU to show that it meets the requirements of the applicable standards, and that is IF the government will even allow anything but an OEM configuration to comply. Sometimes they simply won't recognize anything that isn't OEM no matter how good it is. But if it is OEM ... No problem.
