So I thought I would trade in my 09 Hayabusa on the new R1, thought the new engine would provide some fun.

Well after one day of riding it, I had had enough. Took it back to the Dealer and traded it in on an 09 SE ZX-10R that should be in by mid week.

Here is what I found with the R1

I could not get over the excessive engine heat from the exhaust that cooked my thighs and ass.

I don't just mean around town in traffic even doing a highway run the heat was still heating my thighs.

Around town the bike temp was higher than any inline 4 I have ever owned and the fan would cycle on and off all the time.

Checked the coolant level and it was fine.

I did not care for the power delivery either, below 6000 rpm is seemed lazy, perhaps some gearing would have fixed that but I had had enough!

It did sound cool, give it that but other than that happy to be back on my 10 and look forward to the 09

You are the second person to get the 09 r1 on this forum and get rid of it right away. I hope you enjoy the new 10r.

i think the same thing happened to somebody else on this forum??
That would be me.

If you want a bad ass "600", then BUY the Yamaha 09 R1. :spit:

Over all the heat is really bad but probably would be nice in the winter time. The heat and weight were not deal breakers for me, nor was the coolant overflow or the ugliness.

There is just NO power in the low and mid range. For me that was completely unacceptable and I didn't feel there was enough potential to work with it either.

Lack of power and lack of potential power was the deal breaker for me. I could have worked with pretty much everything else.

The question becomes, but others claim it has plenty of power. Yeah for a 600 it does and usually the people making such claims later state they are following proper break in and haven't actually gone over 5000 RPM's yet.

From the very first ride I could tell it was garbage.

I like the apologists claims of how it fools dynos, takes plenty of relearning how to ride it, and you should be happy with it even with it being garbage because Ben Spies wins on it every weekend.

I think that every magazine that sang its praises and rated it the best bike of 2009 (pandering to advertising dollars) should be fined and the money should go to folks that bought and returned this turd.

Just an idea????

When someone walks into say a US dealership and buys say a US spec 09 R1, there is no guarantee the bike you buy is going to have the same performance as the ones the magazines test. Or anything close to that.

Some magazines like it, others rated it last place. Some called it great, others called it gutless. Who are you to believe?

I bought it and could tell from the very first ride it was way down on power in the low and mid range. From 8-12,000 the power was good, not great but probably workable.

The second day I owned it I put GYTR pipes on it and it was a little better but still slow down low.

I actually think some people buy these bikes and never go over 6000 RPMs riding them from their house to the local Quaker Steak.

I have NO choice but to ride some freeways to work. Shifting down 2 gears to pass a tractor trailer is completely unacceptable.

It could be an interesting class action lawsuit if people could prove that the test bikes were ringers. And/or that the US bikes are truly down on power versus the bikes sold in other countries (and that was not information provided to the customer). They offered to buy back the R6's from unhappy customers when they got caught in their lie about the RPM range. I have nothing against Yami (I love my new little WR250X), I just think companies should deal straight up.

Pre 09 (98-08's) the R1's have always been the best looking Japanese liter bikes, but the new 1 looks like it's eyes have been gouged out. Also with weird changes in the dimensions of the fairing being super wide and tail being shorter, it just looks odd to me.

 But then what do I know, I'm as what 9RTO10R calls a Mantis lover. :spit:

how much value did it loose after one day?
It was a $1100.00 hit but I was prepared for worse to be honest when I approached the Dealer, I already had final out the door numbers on the new 10 from the week before so they could not shuffle the numbers around to show me more of a trade-in value and pad the loss.

It is what it is and I am glad to be off the crap R1

My neighbor did the same thing. He has a track GSXR-1000 and a collection of antique Euro machines and knows bikes pretty well. He had his for exactly 7 days and took it back to the dealer. Friday he came over and asked me to ride it to see if he wasn't missing something. And besides still having that new bike smell come off the engine when you idle it and sounding sweet, it was relatively nutless below 8000. And even above that it didn't feel like a 1K. And it was an ass roaster! I would look down and expect to see the battery melting or melted plastic. He dropped it off and hasn't closed out with the dealer on pay yet. He is a surgean so I think he can afford to deal with them.

Exactly what I have been posting, because that's exactly what I experienced.

Besides no power, I could tolerate all the other normal complaints.

But you are correct about the fairing being super wide and that was my second chief bitch. My dislike for that was probably magnified by owning a 08 10R which is super narrow up front in stark comparison.

The rear end I thought looked great once I put on the GYTR pipes. I really liked the rear end after that. The bike handled great and the weight was not an issue.

I really hated the fat front end with those huge pieces of plastic but could have lived with it if the low and mid power was there or at least the potential of low and mid power.

Gentleman, seriously, back to back rides hoping off my 08 10R to the 09 R1 and back was shocking in the difference. My 08 10 was totally stock and the R1 had the GYTR cans which helped a lot, but that bike needed a LOT MORE HELP!

Sadly enough, only a handful of us R1 owners are willing to admit the truth. Eventually it will come out. Most people just don't wont to admit what they bought is a pile and I can understand it some.
