Gear Calibration on Aim MXL "How To" w/pics

When using the MXl data aq. system you may use channel eight or twelve to compute your gear. The calculated way works well but is slow to react and also has its drawbacks such as when the clutch is pulled in there is no gear shown. The potentiometer on the bike can immediately tell the dash the correct gear.
These instructions are for the NON TRE users. I also have a setup for the TRE users which I will post later.
I will skip taking the farings and all off.
First pic is of the ecm and relay box. This is where you are going to tap into the gear wire from the ecm that goes to the dash.

Pic 2 shows Pin 12 of the right ecm connector. It is the white wire with yellow stripe. A tee will be run from this wire up to the dash. I use 18g mil spec wire.

Pic 3 shows the splicing of the white/yellow wire. I actually did cut it in half to get the heat shrink over the single end and then soldered the three all together.

Pic 4 is of the wire heat shrunk back together.

Pic 5 shows the connector pluggedback into the ecm with the splice ready to run up to the dash.

Pic 6 is of the harness that connects into the mxl harness.

Pic 7 is the light green wire that needs to be cut and the wire from the ecm attatched to.

Pic 8 is soldering the wires together.

Pic 9 is them with heat shring on them.

Next is programming the dash.

Programming the display, once in race studio software.

Make sure the channel 8 button is enabled and the gear calc is disabled.

Click Potetiometer shannel 8 on the channel config button.

Go to the calibrate screen and the potentiometer should be there.

Start the calibration procedure.

You will find that it may take a few calibrations to get the gears just right. I had to do it 3 times. The MXl is much more sofisticated than the bike ecm. The values from the bike jump around a little bit so if it is flashing between gears re-cal.
i have also found that it is better to do it with the bike warmed up. The pot does not drift as much when warm. Also when upshifting to the next gear just pull it up a gear do not use the clutch. By doing this it puts the pot in the same place as going down the road. Sometimes on a stand the trans has no load therefore it is not all the way ingaged.

Thats it, hope everyone that has a data aquisition system takes full advantage of it. Remember that these systems have open channels too. It will do TPS readings, o'2 readings, tire temps with a infrared thermocouple and the list just goes on and on.
