thinking of trying to fab up my own tail section.

I understand using the foam to create the shape.

But when I lay up the fiberglass, how do I get a nice smooth finish
on the paint side?

Do I need to make a reverse form from the form or is there a product that I would finish off the outside surface with?

The short answer is yes.

First you make the shape of the tail, or part out of foam. Then you cover it with resin and sand it again. This is the buck. Apply several coats of wax and then mold release. Lay up an outer "part". Pop it off the buck. That is the mold. You may need to sand it more to get the desired finish. Do the wax and mold release thing again to the inside of the mold and lay up another structure. That is the part.

You just wax it several times. Wax on, wax off, repeat.

A carnauba paste wax works well. Your experiments will tell you.
