Cam Chain Tensioner

Me and my buddy just installed a manual cam chain tensioner from www.aperaceparts.com for the ZX10R and it made a world of difference on the noise level on the bike. The manual cam chain tensioner is a very nice peice from APE. It is anodized a dark green and very easy to install. I would recommend this part to any body with a ZX10R. It is a little peice of insurance for $46.

Is this SPAM or a real post???
hmmm does look interesting.

Anyone know about this?
Crispin the only thing I can tell you is, It gives you the control to adjust the cam chain when it needs it opposed to depending on the stock cam chain spring.
The question is: just how does one know when it needs it? simply by excessive mechanical noise?

I read about this and they said you tighten it to where you hear no valve train noise and it is tight when it no longer affects idle speed...i guess too tight affects idle

They're good parts, especially the APE's. The Gixxer guys love these things. I guess the Zooks have a problem with puking up the original hyd. adjusters so most guys just go with a manual one. I've had them before, just not on the 10.
Well I just ordered one.

I will see if it does anything.

The geartrain is kinda loud.
A manual tensioner is more of a race item. Sorta like Woodcraft case covers. No performance enhancement. Just peace of mind. As mention Suzuki's stock tesioner sucks. Most racers I know replace them with a manual item.

I completely agree with you SP8. I perfer to know the cam chain is tight myself opposed to a self adjusting unit.
the adjusting unit on the zx10r has teeth that prevent it from loosening, SP8 knows what I'm talking about. If you turn the motor 2x backwards the chain will adjust and then forward and it will be where it needs to be...then degree the cams. Pretty easy. I've never used an adjustable one and I'm used to the sounds of the 10r ...who knows I might end up with it since it is green and blings, but the back of it seems like it would hit my main radiator hose??? Anyone else notice this?
The main back of it does not hit your radiator hose I have it installed on my bike. Yes the stock one has teeth on it but that sure is going thur a lot of trouble to make sure the stock one stays tight, but you know what you are doing so you can do that adjustment fairly easy and quick

so in the event our motors aren't in cam degree mode how do you suggest we do this?? turn motor backwards 2x.

I haven't got to that point yet, but the tensioner works the same regardles of cam timing. There is a specific way of doing it. When you pull it out you can not just put it back in, or just retighten it if it's backed out a little. While it's out you have to reset it then put it in. I'll know more this afternoon. Got to finish putting the bike back together.
I know that on the kawi quad motors (kfx 400) the cam chain tensioner is too short. So once your chain stretches a bit the stock tensioner is maxed out and will not keep your chain tight, resulting in excessive noise, premature wear of cam chain, and eventually a jumped chain on the cam gears. And very bad things happen when valves open and close at the wrong time.lol. Anyway, that is the only kawi motor that I know for a fact has a problem w/ this, but I guess that motor was a joint venture with suckzooki. just some info.
