We compared the weights between these brands of wheels, carbon vs aluminum & the results are very interesting.

I think I'll be getting a set of the Piega R wheels in black, way cheaper than BST & only less than 1kg heavier.

I think aluminium would also be a better wheel for the street as it should be less prone to cracking due to potholes.

This is fantastic stuff for me since I always imagined myself buying either the Piegas or the BST (5 spokes clearly look the best!). Thanks for posting.

Question...is there a distinction between a Piega vs. a Piega "R"? I seem to find references to the R in threads from various forums but never been able to find an "R" listed for sale on popular websites. Maybe I'm just not digging deep enough to find it though.

The Piega R wheels are for racing use only & is indicated (machined)on one of the wheel spokes, it's lighter than the Piega which is approved for street use. I think you can still use the Piega R on the street, I just think OZ put a disclaimer on their product just in case someone was crazy enough to do so. I have another ZX10RR here with the GASS RSA wheels but I haven't weighed them yet but they look & feel much heavier.

I'm more into trackdays & racing which is why I'm focused on performance, I try to lighten our bikes as much as possible short of bankruptcy. I'll probably die poor but at least I'm happy.

Whilst there have been some failures from wheels that have been subjected to major impacts from potholes - which would also damage a cast or aluminum wheel in any event.

I've spoken with the guys at BST, they have wheels that are still running on the road from the early 2000's already.

My own wheels date back to 2017 with fast road use as is.

The BST's are not as fragile as all the naysayers make them out to be.

BSTs would be my first choice for sure. I absolutely love the look of them. That being said, the Piegas looks are top of my list too. The "R"s wouldn't be the ones for me though. I ride pot holed Canadian streets so it'd be the slow man's Piegas for me then. If and when.

I'd really appreciate another weight comparison if should ever have a chance to strip the GASS wheels down as well. I'm following this thread just in case you do.

Ha, the gross weight isn't the whole story, it's where the weight is distributed. I have a lot of bikes, all with aftermarket wheels, and the BST'd and Dymag CF'd wheel'd bikes handle noticeably different/better than the Al Marchesini/Carro/Core wheel'd bikes.

I have no doubt about that, I have an 03 CBR600RR with BST CF wheels, my 18 ZX10RR used to run BST CF wheels until the previous owner crashed & totaled the rear end, the BST CF rear wheel is toast which is what I used to compare to the OZ Racing Piega R.

It just boils down to cost, the BST is $1,200 more than the OZ Piega R & if by next year the $ rate drops I'd probably get a set for my ZX10RR. The BST front wheel is still intact but replacing the rear wheel cost as much as a set of Piega R's.

How is it damaged? BST rebuilds them for about $800 if the hub is still in good shape. I had to do this with one of mine (I have 4 sets) after someone tried to pry a tire off with a spoon.

The hub is still in great shape, the rear end of the bike hit the tire barrier when the previous owner crashed at over 200kmh, the subframe & rear wheel bore the brunt of the impact.

Updating this thread, I managed to snag a set of Rotobox RBX² wheels for an irresistible price complete with Brembo Supersport disks on the front & ultralight rear disk with a 41T sprocket. I weighed the wheels without the disks & sprocket to compare it with the other 2.

Front wheel came in at 2.712kgs & the rear is 4.098kg, this is even lighter than the BST wheels it had before. Not a big fan of the Boost design but I'm impressed with how much lighter the rear wheel is, can't wait to try them once I use up my current set of tyres.

Very nice.

What tyres are you looking at going with? @OveRReV

I'm running Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC2 120/70 & 200/55 right now & I'll probably stick with it until I sort out the suspension.

What a great score on those Rotobox wheels. They don't look too bad in person. Sure the original BSTs look pretty great with their slender tapered spokes but I think the weight savings with Rotobox is worth the tradeoff in aesthetics.

I agree, I love the slanted spokes of the BST Diamond Tek but the front weighs 0.07kg & the rear weighs 0.5kg more than the RBX² & I lean towards function than form.
What do you guys think of those newer forged carbon Rotobox Bullet wheels? I think they look super sweet but when viewed directly from the side the paper thin spokes look rather strange to me.
