Ive heard all kinds of explinations as to what people use em for and most sound pretty far fetched to me. My take on them is they stop the sun from hitting the reservoir and degrading the fluid/ causing condensation.

They block UV , soak up spillages and a good place to slip a couple of singles for toll roads.

The main reason is that they soak up spillage of brake fluid from the brake reservoir. Brake fluid on the face of your speedometer will leave ugly spots on it. Do you really need a cover? I guess not, but the first time it seeps out and onto the face of the speedo, you'll wish you did. Hope this helps.
