Any ideas what this could be? I don't think the bike could actually start and fire several times if the ECU were bad. And would the bike at least stay running even if one plug were bad? Or would it die? I haven't checked all 4 plugs, but at least one must be firing if the motor starts.

This is after getting a new battery as recommended in the previous thread.

edit: wasn't sure if i should start a new thread since i have new info about the problem. now i can't delete this one.

new plugs gonna run 30-40 bucks. i've already wasted 80 replacing a battery when i didn't need to. any other ideas i might consider before replacing everything?

you dont need to replace the plugs. you could probably just dry them. pull them all out and see how it looks. if you pull one plug and leave it connected to the coil and turn the motor. see if there is a spark. do that on all cylinders. you need to figure out the spark completely before you can make any objective decisions. does the fuel pump prime? and is there gas in the tank?

You could pull a known good plug from another cylinder, put it on #3 and see if it sparks. That would eliminate (or confirm) a plug issue.
great idea.

okay this is kinda confusing, i'll try to break it down

first plug i pulled was 3, no spark
i pulled plug 2 (forgot to check it for spark)
swapped 2 and 3
so now the plug in 2 is no spark, and the plug in 3 is sparking
so i swap them back. same thing. plug in 2 doesn't spark, plug in 3 sparks.
so now i think it must be the coil pack
i swap coil pack in 2 with coil pack in 3
number 3 is still the only one sparking.

doesn't really explain why at first 3 wasn't sparking at all.

so it's not a bad spark plug or a bad coil pack.

what else?

Gas is good?

Did you touch/fix anything on the bike before this happened?

(EDIT: That's for a 3rd gen, but try it)
Also check the ECU connectors. Unplug them and replug them back to the ECU.
Check if all the wires are plugged-in well into the connectors.
