You won't believe this schit but...
I took the Kawi out for a spin on Sunday with some partners of mine. We get to some open road in the country and my partners take off. No big deal. I hit the throttle and let her breathe a bit. I noticed that I can't get her faster than 130's. So I'm asking myself WTF. Ight time to take it home and see what's really going on. As I come up to a stop sign, I begin to hear a loud metallic knock. I immediately bring her to a stop, hop off and check for any leaks or damage and didn't see any. I called a few friends who came and picked it up on a trailer and took it home. I'm thinking it could be a rod. I read somewhere that 2nd Gen's have a history with throwing rods. I need ya'll to brainstorm and let me know what you think it could be before I break her down. I'll keep you posted!

sounds live valves to me. is the knock coming from the heads or bottom end?

was it still running, just sluggish with a knock or was it making bad top end noises? if you threw a rod i really doubt the bike would run at all and you would have grenaded the bottom end. dropping a valve is usually a catastrophic failure too.

my first thoughts are a main or rod bearing.... pop the valve cover off and check the valve train for any signs of damage, it'll be obvious if you dropped a valve. take the spark plugs out then remove the timing cover and try to turn the motor over by hand with a ratchet on the end of the crank. if you spun a bearing the motor will be very difficult to turn over by hand.

if you think it's a top end issue, pop the timing cover off first and try to turn the motor over. if there's a dropped valve you should be able to go through most of a rotation ok but when that piston tops out the debris would jam up into the head and you'd feel it.

It was still running... and only sluggish at around 130. The knocking began as I was downshifting to a stop. RPM's no higher than 6K during downshifting. The noises sounded like it was coming from the top. More like a high pitch metallic clinging sound.

I had a somewhat the same prob about a month ago. Trailered the bike home. Started it the next day and it was ok. Checked the coolant level and it was pretty low. Ended up that it was damn near overheating. ( Temp gauge does not work). Hopefully that is all that is wrong with your bike man. Hate to hear of a bike taking a dive on ya!

As soon as I hopped off the bike, I had my friend hold it upright and I checked the oil level first... it was exactly where it was suppose to be.

I will take Scott10r's advice and check the coolant... I don't know how that could cause it, but It's worth a try.

drain your oil and see if there are any metal particles or copper pieces in there....
