When I downshift in to 1st gear sometimes (2nd and 3rd) when preparing to stop my exhaust makes a popping/cackling sound. I think it sounds pretty sweet, but is this causing any damage to the engine? Running lean, etc? Or....? Does anybody elses exhaust do this? I figured that since the full exhaust removes the cats and all that that this is probably pretty normal and common? :dontknow:

Thanks!

you should get a pc3 & a map, that stopped the popping on decel on my r1, i was told it was running rich and that popping is fuel running passing thru the exhaust and not getting burnt, there shouldnt be any soot inside the exhaust either, the tip should be turning bluish if your bikes running right... if you get a pc3, im sure you could find a map on the site somewhere from a member with no prob.

Get a PC or Bazzazz and have it properly tuned and that will solve your issues! Sounds like your bike is running too rich or something.

Thanks for the input fellas! I am running a Bazazz z-fi unit w/ custom map, ivan's block offs, and BMC air filter.... I suppose I could just as the fellas in the shop at the dealership and see what they say.. I'm not really worried about it, other than the fact that I don't want any engine damage (obviously). I actually like the sound!

I haven't seen a bike with a custom map and block off plates backfire.

Don't worry about damage. The popping/backfiring is unburnt fuel. Your probably running a little rich. Some tuners like to tune rich at high rpms to cool pistons a bit.

To avoid the "popping" on decel, when possible, just roll off the throttle slower.

I have a Bazzaz map (akrapovic) that's lean and runs really strong. Let me know if you want it. I have a toggle switch and use it for straight line speed.

I would like to have a look at your custom map if you don't care. Just PM me
