airbox intake manifolds on 04-05 zx10r c1/c2

hello everyone,
would anybody out there know about the dividing flap that sits in the entry end of the air intake rubber manifolds (between airbox and frame) on the 04/05 zx10r. The flap seems to not do anything except to split the air flow and i want to know if removing them will cause any adverse effects,

i cut them off just were were they go into the frame ---and so they still are linked to the airbox --- also my frame is sealed off after the manifolds --- and it seemed to give a wider power band --- worked for me! --- and i have an 04
