Hey guys, just some sobering news.

I work for a Fortune 250 company. My department is full of highly skilled folks that range from Mathmeticians to MBA business types (all earning 6 figures or better). We each carry one or more high end government clearances as well.

The work atmosphere is great and the team is very strong... or it was until last week.

From one E-mail sent in 2004, which contained nude pictures (assume comparable to an NWS post here), all recipients that replied and/or forwarded it have been terminated. The E-mail was found during a spot check of some old Exchange backups.

I know boys will be boys and such, but please learn from this. Most companies have zero tollerance policies, which means the moment you're on the other side of that line there are no life rafts.

And whatever you do, don't get so comfortable that you forget your work PC is not your home PC.

FWIW

Yep. I always have to warn people on the computer forums about the dangers of doing stuff on their work computers and networks. Many were asking about ways to circumvent firewall rules so they can get AIM or some other nonsense.

At my company, I don't really worry about it too much as there's a lot of long established tolerance with computer usage. Some of what I've seen on some screens have left me speechless but oh well. After I got Sprint mobile broadband, I stopped using my work laptop to surf the internet. I use my own laptop and connection card at my desk at work. I'll sometimes use my personal laptop/connection to do work stuff as my connection is sometimes faster than the work connection depending on usage.

Other things to watch out for are things that are said in emails...doesn't matter if it's personnal or your time on surfing the net.

They have a similar policy at my work. we can receive joke mails but we can not forward them to anyone. They will track the forward down to the orginal person and terminate them.

We used to have a directory on our network just for porn. They have tightened up a bit and just got rid of the directory. Only policy we have is share it.

Mc--It's a joke! I'm self-employed. Hence, no policy, except the wife's.
My bad. . See, that's what 4 hours of sleep gets ya. A quick reread and I now see how painfully obvious the joke is.

I used to support a buisness office environment. Due to limited bandwidth they had a "no surfing rule" and strick email policy (only business use). I had to play big brother and hated it. I sent out email after email explaining in laymen's terms that no matter what they did every webpage hit, IM and email sent was traceable. Dumb asses where still getting fired. I had to make a living and support my son, so when it came down to me or them, F'em! So next time you're mad at your IT guy for busting you for something, remember YOU did it. ...dumbasses... Ya, I'm still pissed at a few of them. God i'm glad i don't deal with end users anymore. ..nothing but dumbasses.... :1848: :thefinger

Update - 3 more fired today (same incident).

Guys, based on rumor the incident in question involved nothing malicious or illegal (locker room talk and a few NWS pics back and forth), but I'm watching grown professional men (low to mid 6 figures income, high level DoD clearances, families, mortgages, professional degrees, etc., etc.) walked out like felons -- not even allowed to clean their desks out.

I am completely numb to the whole affair. They are all good personal friends.

Do take my experience here as a lesson learned.
