can you remove links? or does that cause a different issue?

Yep, would be a very bad idea to run a 525 chain over a 520 sprocket, image that chain smacking back and fourth when your running at 10,000RPM's+ :badteeth:

yes you can remove links from a chain but it will NOT allow you to run a 525 chain on a 520 sprocket. I am not even sure a 525 chain will fit properly on a 520 sprocket.
