I have not metered anything yet, just trying to get some prefeedback

Briefly: had a dead battery, replaced it and lasted about 3 months. replaced it again (with oem) lasted about 3 days.

A friend told me to look at the regulator voltage, which I'll do tonight.

My questions:
1. Can a regular ohm meter be used to check the regulator? Or is the "special hand tool" needed?
2. What would crap out first; the alternator or regulator?
3. and of course -- Is this a common issue; is there a probable cause?

Thanks,
Josh

Found the resin on the stator coil deteriorated - short with chasis, draining battery.

Looked for a place to get it re-resined but looks like I gotta pony up the 260 for a new one  damn.
