So after rebuilding my bike (plastics mainly, small spill) my speedo decided to stop working for me. It still displays temps (both engine and intake), fuel consumption and RPM's but speed stays at 0 and no miles get recorded at all. Ive pulled my hair out and my pubes are all I got left, anyone got any ideas on what it could be?

PS: Also, only had 1 FI code pop up but I accidentally shut off the bike and restarted it so I did not see the code, I do remember it showing all 3 levels of KTRC blinking tho... and its only happened once, I havent been successful in getting it to replicate

Sounds like there is an issue with the wheel speed sensors, I would double check the wiring to the sensor, clean of the magnet and re-install. Then go for a test drive. The KTRC flashing could also be the same issue with the wheel speed sensors. Give it a check and report back what you find.

Is it safe to assume that speed is measured off the rear wheel speed sensor rather than the front?

Sounds like there is an issue with the wheel speed sensors, I would double check the wiring to the sensor, clean of the magnet and re-install. Then go for a test drive. The KTRC flashing could also be the same issue with the wheel speed sensors. Give it a check and report back what you find.

Ok so after a quick swap (front and rear) I determined there's something faulty with the rear sensor. Wiring harness end connectors are good but the connector end on the rear sensor looks like it kinda split on pin 2... really activates my almonds..

clean all the conector... had a problem like that not long time ago and changed the sensor and battery
reflash the bike and its gone

well I cleaned up the connectors and still no dice, found one on ebay for less than 30 so im waiting on that to come in now. The thing thats confusing me tho, while the bike is on and rear wheel is spinning I still get no FI error or anything both with the sensor connected and disconnected... I wouldve thought to at least get (b 44) or something... Anyone got any idea why its not displaying anything?

For certain it's something you did with the harness.
How so? I just tested the front sensor into the rears harness and it registers on the Speedo...
Man you're scaring me if I have to replace that :s

I would not take what scout says to heart to much.... he has a tendency for stating things completely incorrect, misconstruing things and outright being confused about what the subject matter is.

So correct me if I am wrong but you are saying that with the front wheel not spinning but the rear wheel spinning you are not getting a mph reading? If so that would be correct if your connector is contacting the sensor correctly. Basically the bike is reading no movement from the front and no movement from the rear so there are no issues. Its when you move the front wheel without any reading from the rear or vice versa there are issues with the KIBS or KRTC. Now is the connector in the image above from the wheel speed sensor? Or from the harness side?

Np for the welcome, when you have a moment make a thread introducing yourself. Makes for some good rib jabbing if not good place to see the bike.

I made a topic, look for it.... made me nuts for a while..

no codes.. and the speedo was jumping... cero, numbers, then cero... on drugs the speedo..

ok so I have my bike on a rear stand during all of this, I believe the rear wheel sensor is the only one that reads for speed and mileage on the speedo while the front is for sync purposes (KIBS/KRTC). Reason I say this is because everytime I've clean my chain I have it on this stand and it has read speed on the speedo (rear wheel moving/front wheel stationary).

I have only gotten the KRTC 123 FI error just once (missed the code), and that was when I was on the road after realizing that my speedo wasnt working. (I had just finished re-assembling my bike and did not test every nook and cranny, rookie mistake I know, as it can be dangerous)

At the moment, while my bike is on the rear stand and the rear sensor being disconnected, I can turn it on and put it in first and let it spin the rear wheel (on 1st gear Idle RPM runs about 8-10mph). I would have thought by now that the KRTC FI error would pop on... or at least a b code showing that my rear sensor is missing but nope. I just have a speedo that sets on 0.

Now, what I have in the picture is the Male connector thats on the rear wheel sensor which I thought was split on 1 pin but it was just my eyes playing tricks on me (didnt sleep the whole night trying to figure out the problem), the Female (harness) connector is all good. I came to the possible conclusion that my rear wheel sensor actually just failed because of a couple of reasons
1. The insulated wire that is between the actual sensor and the male connector was somehow pinched between the muffler and swingarm, giving 2 possibilities:
1a. The wire couldve been nicked. (Multimeter test shows its a closed circuit, but im still skeptical)
1b. The wire couldve been heated to the point that it somehow messed up the magnet on the sensor... even tho there is no warping or visible damaged on the outer wire.... (heat + magnet= failure).

2. After finding out the front and rear sensor uses the same connectors, I swapped the front to the rear and I was finally getting speed readings on my speedo. This cleared my mind of the harness/ECU/KIBS system being the problem. I did not try the rear sensor on the front tho, mainly because I thought it'd be pointless since I couldn't directly test it as well when it is connected to the front and I have no way to get the KRTC error to come up reliably.

So... I guess what I am trying to find out right now is
-Why the KRTC error wont show without the sensor being connected
-How common is a failing speedo? What is usually the culprit?

I do find it odd that the rear speedo failed when my last impact was on the left side of the bike ( I high sided on a right turn and the bike slammed on its left side into grass)

Yeah I just read through that whole thread, did it finally go away? and Im not having the same problem, my speedo just stays at 0 the whole time and KRTC does not engage in any level no matter how hard I slip the rear wheel

The traction control (maybe ABS too?) is programmed to function only above a certain speed (25kph if memory serves correctly). That being the case, I speculate that the computer shouldn't trigger an error code while spinning on the rear stand.

I've also been told that you can indirectly disable the traction control if you do an intentional standing burnout. That would tell me that the ECU is smart enough to know when the bike is on a stand and that it allows you to spin the rear while the front is stationary.

Oh yeah! completely forgot about that. It actually activates at 5kph/3.1 mph (1-14 in SM), Ill go ride it in a bit to see if itll pop up.

and that second part makes sense, too bad I wont try it out cause Im too broke to buy a new rear if I waste this one like that lol

... Can't edit till my 30 something post huh...

Anyways I just test rode it and still got no error. Got it up to about 20mph (according to gps) and got nothing.

Meh I guess I shouldn't worry about it too much until I get the new sensor installed.

Yup, sensor got killed by the exhaust pinching it (due to lay'er down). The ebay replacement works well and Im back to normal. Problem solved







wont lie I kinda feel dumb but at the same time kinda surprised that the speed sensor actually died. oh well

Well I would not say the sensor died more like it got beat to death, or just down right murdered! :thumbsup:

Yes, rear is the speed sensor; one thing about these types of problems is that the report never includes the full history...you crashed.

Without full history all the good guys here chase tails.
