2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R Preview

We discover secret info about the baddest Ninja ever!
By Kevin Duke, Jul. 13, 2010, Photography by Kawasaki

If you’ve been paying attention lately, you’ll have seen evidence of a new teaser marketing campaign in advance of Kawasaki’s upcoming 2011 ZX-10R literbike. A trickling of info, photos and an all-too-brief video have been served up at Kawasaki-Challenge.com since the site launched on June 21.
The site’s latest dollop of 10R news came last week when a race version of the 2011 ZX-10R took part in track testing at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan on July 7 and 8. The non-stock Ninja was ridden on the first day by test rider Hidemichi Takahashi, followed up on day two by Kawasaki’s former World Superbike star rider, Akira Yanagawa.

Precious little details about the bike have been officially released, but based on information we’ve recently gleaned, we’re able to shed some light on what we will see from Kawasaki this fall when the production bike is officially unveiled...

Greetings from Suzuka Circuit! Inside the Kawasaki pit this morning.

Doing a final check before riding.

Our test rider this morning was Hidemichi Takahashi.

Racer front cowl. Note the sharper, more aggressive design and new Ram Air position & shape.

The Next Ninja has a more compact package than our current racers.

Akira Yanagawa adjusts his riding position. Ergonomics offer an excellent fit and great feedback.

At this stage of development, the Next Ninja has a better top speed than our current race machines.

The new chassis is very well balanced, offering light transition from side to side.

Greetings from Autopolis Circuit! Weather so far has been cycling through sun, cloudy and light rain.

Autopolis is Kawasaki's home test track. Its flowing corners have been the testing ground for many Kawasaki machines.

We have a great deal of data at this track, enabling us to test at a very high level.

WSB racer Tom Sykes (R), his team mechanic and Pere Riba (L) have come from Europe to join this test.

Pere Riba is a former GP racer who currently works as a Kawasaki test rider.

Pere Riba has logged a lot of hours at Autopolis. He has been explaining the course to Tom Sykes.

Inside the pits: a mechanic’s work is never done.

Inside the pits: the Next Ninja waits patiently for its next chance to go out.

Inside the pits: double-checking chassis setup.

Testing in the middle of summer is hot work. With temperatures over 30℃, staying hydrated is essential.

And they’re away! Tom Sykes and the Next Ninja leave the pits to enter the track. VT: http://twitvideo.jp/02RDv

Day 2 at Autopolis. It rained early in the morning but the track dried before noon so testing continued.

Tom Sykes works on his riding position before going out.

The riding position is more compact and offers easier control than the current racer.

Although new to both the Next Ninja and Autopolis, Tom worked hard to add to his lap count.

Inside the pits: back from the course, Tom relates his impressions to the staff.

Inside the pits: adjusting settings based on Tom #039's feedback.

Tom went back and forth between two bikes, evaluating the Next Ninja.

Ninja shoes! Standard equipment for Kawasaki Superbike Racing Team staff.

Pere Riba was scheduled to test in the afternoon, but rain got in the way of our plans.

Testing is finished for now. Fresh perspectives from Tom & Pere gave us a great deal of valuable data.
