So I’ve always been interested in building a cafe racer. Some of you may have seen my thread earlier this week and here was the outcome:

She’s in my backyard now and I’m just about to start getting her together to see if the engine runs. Gonna take the tank off to get a good look, order the necessary parts as they come up.

Thought I’d start a build thread to keep me honest (hope no one minds).

Ok.... here it goes!!

Subscribed. This is gonna be good.

This is gonna take a while! Hhaha.

The frame needs a lot of attention, I’m gonna have to cut the previous welds, grind them down and re-weld it. It looks like they just stacked welds on one another to get the gaps to close.

Ordered some things today just to get it going:

-clutch lever and perch
-left hand controls
-stator
-clutch kit

Once I get her breathing again, I’ll break it all down and focus on getting the frame right

Looks like I’ve sourced someone a couple hours away that light have every single part I need. If that’s the case, this might be purring sooner than expected.

So, quick change of plans. Gonna update this bad boy while I’m at it. Trying to source swing arm, and full front from a K6/K7 gsxr. This should be fun.....

Picking up a donor Zephyr to Frankenstein the engine for the GPZ.

The Zephyr’s motor failed a compression test, so I’m taking all the accessories and wiring off to complete the GPZ. It also has a 4 to 1 exhaust with a hideous muffler, but that’s easily fixable.

The frame and suspension from the donor will go to a good friend of mine so he could start up a project.

Got all ball bearings identified depending on what GSXR front end I can source first. Will need to find a machinist nearby to make me some spacers for the swing arm. Not a gang of he three blade wheels on gsxr’s, but getting some custom wires will be out of my price range and I’d like her to at least have a 180 on the rear.

Do you jay leno motorcycles? Where's the value?

What’s that mean? Do I jay Leno motorcycles? The value is I get to build something and I don’t spend a cent of YOUR money.

The Value is riding down the road on something you put together and worked on with your own two hands and for some of us that is very satisfying. I know for myself personally, working on a bike is my Zen time, its sheer meditation.

One day ill have a project like this, probably cafe and hopefully a KZ or something similar. There is just something fun about riding a small displacement machine at or near its max and the flickability of a smaller bike. Heck ive had fun on a 30mph scooter. :badteeth:

A genuine restoration would be awesome too. The factory lines on the older GPZ’s are just sexy. But I just had to pick it up for the $100 pricetag

Id be more than happy to be caught banging any of the broads currently listed in those pics Sebastian. Not enough Like Button for all that porn.

Anyone else notice how you could find a fairly cheap KZ 1K around 06 08? Then almost overnight they all got bought up for resto's and cafe projects? Damn near impossible to find a 1000 or 900 near me now that either hasnt been molested and stretched all to hell or they want $3K for some shitty roller thats a rusty basketcase. I'll probably have to travel for the one i want when/if the time comes.

Edit - fuk it im adding the GPZ to my list of project bikes to choose from. Honestly hadnt considered it til now.

They do make a gpz750 or higher. I don’t mind the 550, took one out from a friend of mine and it’s pretty gutsy for what I need it to do (light leisure Sunday ride)

Yup got one from eBay, but I’m still working a lot of different options for donor bikes. If I can find a donor bike with a running 750 (or higher) engine, then I’ll just throw it on the frame and call it good for the sake of getting it road worthy again.
