Allright, So I went camping at Clearlake with a bunch of freinds this weekend. Decided to bring the 10 and meet my buddy who lives near the lake and go for a little ride.He just picked up a used RC51.
So we take off on Soda Bay road RC51 out front. I can ride his ass no problem. We head over the Hopland grade. I am out front this time. We are carvin pretty good...........At least for us....LOL Anyway he is all over me I cant loos him at all. No biggie we feel we are pretty equal.
We get to the other side and get a drink and BS about the road. We decide to switch bikes. He has new set of pilot power on. I am still running the stock dunlops. (My powers are sitting in the garage.) I take off again out front. I am noticing he isnt as close he must be unconfortable on the 10.
I leave him about 4 or 5 corners back. come up on a car and he cant pass with me.I end up leaving him way back. I cant even see him anymore.
What I noticed about the RC51/ZX10 Its like camparing riding a 4 stroke dirt bike to a 2 stroke. The RC 51 was really easy to ride.I felt like anyone can get on it and feel comfortable right away. Which is a great thing. But pisses me off I am working alot harder on my 10 to keep up with 6 year old technoligy.
The RC51 has the suspension set up by a guy on the track. Basically just to weight. Ride height etc..... He has a set of rear sets almost to the top and stock clip ons. I used almost NO body movement to take a corner. The ten is all body movement.
The Ten is straight off the showroom floor as far as suspension and tires goes. with Heli bars,Vortex rear sets,(but set up for comfort). The 10 kills the RC51 in the straights. But I want the 10 more ridable in the twisties.
I also noticed the on the Honda I could get on the gas way soon coming out of the corner + carry more speed going in. This has to be more than just tires. I was going to start with tires and put the old clip on back on, Raise the rear sets, and switch to a 16 on the front. Or should I sell the 10 and get a honda?????????????????????????

i just did hopland last sunday comin home from fort bragg.

The 10 kills the fiddy1 no matter where it is if ya ride it instead of escorting it :spit:

Anyway theres a lot of factors that play into a ride like this, the guy behind has an easier time judging corner entry speed based off the bike in front, i.e. brake light activation or not etc and yeah the tire make a diff in the 10 so get those dunpops off and get the suspension setup or get a Honda and feel all fuzzy inside.

Sorry, I can't answer anything but there has got to be something that can be done to adjust the suspension and get her set up right. Honda's though are known for good ergonomics and being easy to ride.

Hey bud...did he like at least the gear indicator I sold ya?.

Ok, back to the topic...one thing I don't get is you said when you were on the 51 and went to pass cars your bud couldn't keep up...I hope your saying he was to far behind....because even on a 10 you can hit warp speed and catch up quickly so I wonder if this guy really knew how to open up a 10.

Also, since I meet you in person I know you are a very big guy...he's not fat but a strong built guy for those who don't know. Remember the stock 10 comes from factory for a 150lb rider. I would work on the suspension and see if it makes you more comfortable like the 51. Take care.

I know I know......................
Ya he said he didnt have to read the road ounce because he was just going off my line and lite. All I could think of was all the threads I read on here of people going down due to gravel.............That is one dirty friggin road.
LOL
What pisses me off is I can dust him when we switched. Me on his bike and him on mine. I am all over him when I am behind him on the 10. He even said he hates lookin in the mirror and seeing me right there. So he should be able to do the same.
He said he felt like he was pushing the 10 pretty hard. The 10s suspension is pretty harsh. and the Hondas is pretty soft in the front and a bit stiff in the rear. He felt the same about both bikes. You do have to push the 10 down into the corner as the Honda just fell in. I will spend some time on the 10 first.
I am hoping the 16 up front is going to allow me to get on the gas sooner coming out of the corner. Second is still two twitchy and third is too high. Not enough torque.

Actually Blue he wanted me to email you to see if you can make one for the Honda......LOL
I swear he bugged me all weekend about it.

I got stuck behind a car and he was able to catch up. I came up on a open corner so I went around(probabaly not my smartest decision) He was bitching about the move cause it was a small S turn and you could see only so far.I had plaenty of time but he wasnt comfy following me. That where I lost him. He said he couldnt even see me after that. Took him two turns to get around. By then I was gone. The ten wals the RC51 in the power band like its sitting still. He wasnt running up high in the rpms. On the 10 I was in 2nd-3rd and 3rd 4th on t he RC51. You never had to worry about the rear breaking loose. The back end on the RC51 did get real light while under hard breaking or real heavy down shifting but nothing felt uncontrolable.
I am a bit heavier than I look even. I weigh in at 250lbs. I know I am way over the set up for the bike. But I got F-ed bad on my dirt bike suspension. So I am a bit scared to just go to anyone for the work on the 10.

Well, that's good news the Gear Indicator is working out for ya. Your bud needs to wait...still trying to make sure everyone is happy on one Kawi bike...lol

As, you might already know we have many track guys on this site that maybe can help you get started. I need to do the same attention on my bike so If I find out anything locally or by testing I will pass it along.

LOL.............
We do need to get together BD! You gotta let me know when your over this way or that way. The guy on the RC51 is my best friend so I usually head that way to ride. Thats why I went with the Heli's and lowered the Vortex. But I rode the RC51 from my house to his and was ok. Sac area to Cobb mountain (146 miles). So I may rethink the set up.

I will let him know Blue.....
He wants a gear indicater and levers. He isnt to computer savy........lol
It worked great. I did get a bit of flickering toward the end of the day. But I was going to check my connections later in the week.

:dontknow: yet for me...that will be cool if jstwkd1 can come down to Reno too. I had a little squirly today going up to Tahoe and notice a little bump/flare on the sidewall next to the rim...so need to get a new tire anyway as that was my drag tire and have adjustable links on the way..hopefully..(they were back ordered) so I can ride the mountains in stock height again. Will update later.

Sorry for the :eek:t:

With my 120 mile ride down the mountain from Tahoe today I did notice some flickering on mine too at the end of the ride...it might be heat related to the internal Gear Switch on the bike,..dontknow f'sho, so I would just monitor...as you know like all that have the indicator even with some flickers it gives good information and fun to watch.

Thanks for the offer...I think I will be ok..contacted Ryan Schnitz himself and he hooked me up to his personal assistant that was waiting for my call. She said they will ship soon when they get them in.

Well I would rather not.......LOL
I am hoping to find someone who can help me with the suspension set up. I can probably get it close but suspension takes some time to learn. My dirt bike guy said he can make changes to the system off the bike but he is a dirt bike guy. He is a hell os a suspension guy. Just not sure if he is the right guy for the street bike. He doesnt do street but said he would work on mine if I took it off the bike and brought it to him.
I want more done than just setting the sag. At my weight I am crushing thru the plushness of the suspension and sitting in all the harsh shit.

doesn't sound like he's the guy.

As you probably know by now the OEM stuff can only be so good and for the vast majority it will suffice without spending big cheese however if your inclined to improve it i think you know whats required. I have a pretty good handle on suspension but by no means a wizard so if by chance were able to hook up perhaps i can help.

I know, thats why he hasnt seen the parts yet. If we do hook up I will take you up on that offer BD. Thanks
I dont have that kind of cash laying around right know. If the house sells soon I will rethink my cash flow. I think iI am going to look for a rear link from a 6. Is it from the 600 or 636 that is the one to get?

Just a quick note: I had a bud who rode a seriously modded '00 51 (OZ wheels, Ohlins all around, Dan Kyle motor work, lots of other stuff) while I had my stock '00 51, and he would smoke me in the twisties. He soon found out that the 51 is NOT a HP king so he went out and bought an '03 GSXr1000 and modded the hell out of that. After that, he could only get away from me in the straights and I would catch him back up as soon as the road turned.

Moral of the story? On the road, a 51 is more forgiving and easier to ride fast for an average Joe. I'd still have one if they weren't so damn heavy (and the 51 will get killed on the track regardless of rider).

Ya, Thats what I figured. Its a decent bike. This one is a 00. I felt like a jockey on a horse. all up high and tight. Honestly I was surprised at how light it did feel knowing what it weighs in at.
We will only make it to the track ounce or twice a year. We do more street riding then anything and are probably pretty slow compared to most. But we have a good time and try and be safe.
I am more bummed what he payed for it and how competitive he is on it. I will justhave to get better............lol
He was all excited on a straight when he stuck with me.......lol He says hey I just need to be raedy for you to take off and rev the 51 to the moon. And I can stick with you in the straights.I laughed and told him I wasnt pinned.......He didnt believe me. Next time!
