if you don't have the wrench, I would use a dull punch, or a long screwdriver that's dull. A chisel will cut into the tabbed rings and has a high likelihood of scratching something you don't want to
If you're gonna go the beater route, then get a long flat punch to do it. A screw driver will chew up the notches on both the locking and preload collars. Especially if tightening as more force is required to spin them as the spring compresses. The spanner is the best, but it's tight in there. Invest in a quality punch and go at it that way.
I've used an adjustable filter pliers before. (not sure if you have room for that or not)
