Dropped a screw. Damnit.

I thought I'd try to save 5 minutes changing my air filter over the week-end by not completely removing the tank.

I propped the front of the tank up with a few rags, and with a 90' screwdriver, was able to get the airbox top off, and inserted the new air filter element.

Going to put back in the left-rear screw, it was a tight fit and... drop.
The screw fell into the bike... somewhere.

Shit.

So I go ahead and take the tank off, and start looking. And looking.
I pull the bike into the middle of my street, angle it so I have maximum Sun angle.

Use my brightest flash light.

Go fishing with one of those magnetized telescoping sticks.

I took off my front-sprocket cover, thinking maybe it'd worked it's way into there.

I can't freaking find it. It did not fall on the garage floor.

So, it's in a crevasse, somewhere.

I'm pretty resolved to just let it sit where ever it is, order a new screw, and chalk it up to being an idiot trying to save time.

But before I button it back up with the hideaway, the thought of it somehow sneaking into my front sprocket and locking up the drivetrain gives me pause.

Suggestions or ideas?

i did that with a steering damper bolt .. so i painted a bolt red and dropped it where i dropped the other one .. lost that one too tried it again and then found all 3

as long as you have your sprocket cover on i wouldn't worry about it

Ha I did the exact same thing a while ago. I pulled the fairings off, pulled the entire airbox out, front sprocket cover, even had a tube taped to the end of my vaccum cleaner and tried blowing it with an air nozzle and couldn't find it. I finally put it together and rode it. One ride through town and the screw was sitting in my belly pan:rolleyes: I didn't save much time in the end either

I dropped a couple screws and a tiny block of wood (don't ask) while putting headers on my mustang and never found them until recently when I had the motor out. They were there for over two years. The wood was nice and burnt from exhaust heat.

That sux....I hate dropping little screws like that. Too many places to look. but make sure it's not in the tire when you rolled it out in the sun!

Every time I work on my bike or car I either A) Lose a fastener of some kind, or B) Get it back together and have a fastener left over with no apparent home. My theory is that if I take my bike apart enough times, it will actually hold itself together with no fasteners for assistance.
