1/4 Mile First Timer

I got my 08 back from the dyno about a week ago and decided I would take it to the local 1/4 mile Friday night to see what it would do. This was my first time ever at a drag strip and pretty much the most seat time I've had on the bike this year (put about 20 miles on it after getting it back from the dyno). The bike has under 2k miles total (picked up as a holdover at the end of last year) so I'm still learning the bike and getting a feel for it.

Track was New England Dragway (90 ft. above sea level, all concrete). Temps were in the low 60's and it wasn't very humid on Friday night.

I made 7 passes total, and my best runs were the first three.

1st Run:
60': 2.292
330': 5.226
1/8: 7.461 @ 107.52
1000': 9.392
1/4: 11.036 @ 136.62

2nd Run:
60': 2.070
330': 4.934
1/8: 7.105 @ 114.50
1000': 8.972
1/4: 10.578 @ 139.08

3rd Run:
60': 2.128
330': 4.985
1/8: 7.167 @ 114.23
1000': 9.042
1/4: 10.624 @ 141.21

The remainder of the runs were in the 11's @ 130-somethings with traction becoming a huge issue. First three passes were made back to back at the beginning of the night. I took a break and when I cam back the track had started to go away rapidly, and continued to decline throughout the night. It is their street night there so everyone comes out with anything and everything off the street, usually won't do a burnout to clean the tires, and drag all kinds of crap onto the track. My final run I trapped 134 and I was spinning when I crossed the line in 4th, so I decided that was enough for one night. I will go back on a Wednesday night next time as I hear the track conditions are usually better (less street car/truck traffic).

The bike is definitely capable of a LOT better, I just need the seat time. Bike is a 3rd Gen putting down 171 hp and 80 ft. lbs. at the rear wheel, and is geared -1/+2. I am still running the stock Bridgestone BT016 tires, and I had the rear set to about 20 psi cold for Friday night. Suspension settings weren't changed from street setup, but I did strap the front and drop a hole in the rear link for the strip. As for weight, I'm not sure. Bike hasn't really had any weight reduction done and I didn't remove any mirrors, plate braket, etc. I weigh about 165 without gear, and I figure my Cortech suit, boots, gloves helmet must weigh at least 15 or 20 lb.

Nice and bike looks awesome!

I am same weight as you. My bike is stock I want to run a 1/4 just to see what I can do.

I had a blast, and I can't wait to do it again. It is definitely addicting. Overall I'm pretty happy with my times given it being my first time ever on a track and my minimal seat time overall on the bike. It was pretty frustrating though when the track wouldn't hold and the times started getting slower. There was also an 03/04 Gixxer 1k strapped w a pipe and a Busa w a pipe and lowered some both running low 10's/high 9's with high 130's/low 140's for trap speeds. They may have had other mods but those were the obvious ones. The Gixxer rider had a couple of years experience and the Busa rider had 4 or 5 years under his belt so I was happy that I was that close on my first attempt. Just goes to show how much of an animal these ZX-10's can be!

Yes seat time is the biggest part. First 60ft is even bigger! Keep practicing and watch your times drop. Its totally addicting isn't it?!?!

Bike looks very nice... you will get better with some seat time. Almost every time I go out I improve from the last time and I still have a lot of room to improve.

Tonight I tried a Shinko HookUp for the first time.... boy oh boy I went from having all sorts of traction issues with the Q2 to NONE whatsoever.

Mods are as follows: Yoshi TRC Carbon Slip-On, Akra Link Pipe, K&N "Street" Air Filter, Secondary Flies Removed, All Short Stacks, Smog/Air pump removed/bypassed, Kawi Race Intake Cam (Degreed 110 In./104 Ex.), Kawi Thin Head Gasket, Geared -1/+2, PCV w custom tune. I would like to try a tire like that someday, but the majority of my riding is still on the street. I just have a strap kit and multi-hole rear link so I can slam it for street nights at the local 1/4 mile if I want. I am going to start looking for new tires soon though. I would like a slightly softer tire that hooks up a little better on the strip and has a more solid planted feel in the corners when I'm riding on the street. Thinking maybe Michelin, but I haven't really researched it much yet.

For you guys that have been playing around on the strip for a while, is there any adjusts that you recommend doing to the stock shock/forks (ie. rebound & compression) to transfer the power better? This is my secondary bike that is mainly street ridden, so I don't want to get into aftermarket suspension components (at least not yet). Someday when I retire it to 1/4 mile duty only I will get more serious about the suspension.
