new guy with a broken bike

My name is Korey, I live up in south dakota.
So my buddy is selling me his gen 1 zx10r cheap, only issue is he says he thinks it spun a bearing. This wouldn't be an issue if I could find repair parts. I can find some 79mm pistons and gaskets but I can't find the other parts I'd need/want.
looking forward to reading up more on this bike and researching mods for it

Welcome to the party Korey!

You should be able to get all the parts you need at the dealer. OEM is still available for that bike. Kawi is good about that. Spun bearings suck, but if you get it cheap enough, you'll have a beast of a bike when you're done!

I may not be perfect, but at least I don't ride a Suzuki.

Ridding the Internet of bad grammar, 1 post at a time.

its a 2004 with around 8k on it for $2k
I'm going to pick it up next weekend. I'll go talk to my local dealer about parts after I know what the issue is for sure.

Hello, Not bad. I just 3,500 for mine. engine is in good shape as far as I can tell with 22k m, but it had been dropped at low speed so its got a small scratch on the frame 1"X1". I think the frame slider took most of the damage cause I noticed its all banged up as well.
I had the kawai do the oil and chain adjustment, because they dont want me working on cars/motorcycles where I live. 89$ for an oil change and chain adjustment sheesh. He said a valve adjustment would run me around 600$
I would do the work yourself if you can when winter comes and save a ton.
Parts are not that much its the stinking labor. 75$ an hour here.
I used to work on my old z28 with nothing but a good engine book and patience, I think I am going to do the same with this bike. Find a good book on engines and the help on this site is amazing, I just need to rent a storage unit to work on the damn thing lol
Keep us updated on the repairs.

I will start a thread documenting the rebuild/mods after I pick it up.
I planned to do the work myself other than boring the motor out and any other machining work it may need. My plan for the bike is to lower it and extend the swing arm. Where I live we have no corners so I'd rather tune it for straight line. I'm going to try and start organizing top speed contest so I'll be working towards that. I work at a union sheet metal shop so I can do quite a bit of the work there.
