Personally I don't feel their should be individual gen shirts anymore. My thoughts lean more toward a "generic" .Net design that would embody all past and future gens. It's not really cost efficient to create products with a new design for every gen that comes out.
The idea of new shirts comes up from time to time so let me explain a few things.
First, the history:
The store started out as a pre-order type idea and then turned into a way of helping pay for the sites costs. Our first and main concern was to create a quality shirt. We could have went the cheap/easy way and just upload a design to one of the many online shirt printing sites but decided to do silkscreening instead.
Rich and I put together an idea and Rich took pre-orders. Members were kept in the loop with updates as things progressed. Rich was keeping on top of things and pushing for a quality product so the printer needed to redo the shirts once or twice until Rich felt the quality was worth passing on to our members. The wait wasn't much longer than originally stated. But to be honest, some members were giving Rich a hard time from the start. The second some of the members let go of their $ they were wondering where their shirts were.
Because of the hard time Rich received from some of the members he decided to order shirts using his own $ for the second go around. We opened a store page and started selling different products. When stock got low Rich would use the "profits" from the store to order more of the popular sizes/styles. The reason I put quotes around the word profit is because the site was costing more than the $ that was coming in from the store and from sponsors.
By the time the third gen came out Rich had more things going on in his life and the store wasn't one of his top priorities. He kept things going but the shipping times slipped. We talked about a third gen design and I even came up with one that we had planned on making, but it just never happened. The store orders were slipping, probably in part due to the slow shipping problems. Rich didn't seem too sure about putting more $ into a new design. We also discussed coming up with a site design instead of a gen specific design every few years once the current stock was sold. This also makes sense so as to eliminate having as much left over, unwanted stock sitting around.
A few years ago Rich gave in and sold the site. It was a hard decision for him but things and priorities change for everyone. The new owners allowed Rich to keep the store going to try and recoup some of his $ that he had put into the products right before the sale.
That brings us to the present:
Motorcycle.com has been asked by other boards about creating shirts. The last I heard was that they were looking into doing their own thing but would not stop site staff from doing shirts, for now. But that at any time they might tell us to stop the sales which would mean eating any unsold stock. Makes sense, it's their forums, they pay the bills and if they feel they could profit from creating and selling products they have that right.
