Very loud squeal under tank

2011
Mods: Akra slip-on, PC5, Guhls ECU flash, K&N filter

Symptoms:

-Had a slight stumbling feeling a few days ago. Lasted 5 seconds, maybe. Roads were wet and I chalked it up to the TC. A few minutes prior though, my fuel light came on so I stopped and got a full tank of gas: 93 octane.

-Did the stumbling again today on my way home, however it didn't quit. Same tank of gas. 10-ish or so miles from fuel light coming on. Started sounds like a v-twin. Found the closest parking lot and pulled in and it shut off on it's own. Can smell the fuel.

-I let it sit for a few minutes and tried to restart once, but it made a very loud squealing sound from underneath the tank after the 2nd crank. Pushed it home.

3,100 miles...all fluids changed within the last 1,100 miles. I do have a 2 year, $0 deductible warranty. It was dark by the time I got home, so I didn't lift the tank to peak around. And quite honestly, I bought the warranty so I don't have to screw with it. I am mechanically inclined however.

FI light never came on at all.

I did find the Sticky involving dropping power/cylinder issue in regards to the PC5 firmware update.

Does this sound like a PC5 firmware problem, or the fuel pump?

My guess would be fuel pump. Pull the tank off yet? I know there's a thread on how to measure the fuel being pumped out to see if the pump is weak. Maybe search that.

Exactly. Sounds like the fuel pump is bad. Noise under the tank and poor running = probably the fuel pump.

I may not be perfect, but at least I don't ride a Suzuki.

I did come across that thread some where.

Lifted tank, disconnected PC5, problem persisted.

Immediately after it happened I assumed fuel pump. But once I started searching around, I read other threads about the PC5 firmware. In my past experiences, the fuel controllers (if installed) have always been my first step in solving rough running bikes. It helps to isolate a fueling issue.

My next question is in regards to the warranty, and it may be a silly question but the idiot asks no questions, since the bike has a PC5 (a fuel device) would it affect the dealer replacing the fuel pump under warranty? Fuel pump...fuel controller...they're at least in the same ball park.

This may sound crazy to some. But if I was to take it to the stealership, I would remove the PCV 1st. Why? 3 reasons. 1.) If it is the PCV you would know immediately after removing the PCV and starting it 2.) If it is the PCV and the shop locates the problem in the PCV you will be charged for their service, because the problem was not a part of the original bike warranty. 3.) If you remove the PCV and problem persists then you know the Problem is not the PCV and they are fully responsible for correcting the issue. If the shop has any suspicion that the problem is not their responsibility they will not take any responsibility for the problem resulting in $ from your pocket. IMHO as always. Just my 2 cent. Hope this helps in some way.

I did unhook the PC and the problem still persisted. But I'm picking up what your laying down. That's my main concern with taking it to the stealer as well.

This. Remove the PCV and try it. There's no warranty issues that way either. The can deny warranty if aftermarket parts are found to be a contributing factor.

And I can pretty much tell you that a solid-state device like a PCV won't make a loud squealing sound, so you can pretty much rule that out as the cause. At least I would.

I may not be perfect, but at least I don't ride a Suzuki.

As I mentioned, the problem remained even when I unhooked the PC, however I think I'm just going to take it off anyways. I really don't want to run into any problems with the dealership about it. It's one less thing for them to point the blame at.

Had same issue on mine without the squealing noise. Ended up i got a bad batch of gas and had a dirty air filter, and it fouled 3 plugs. Changed plugs, air filter, and treated the tank for bad gas. Never had the problem again.

Take it to Kawi and see waht they say. Thats your best bet.
