stator questions?

So my bike died while riding home last. Night, the lights flickered and then it just shut off. I trailored it home and jump started it. It ran for about 2 minutes then died again. I am guessing the stator is going bad. I pulled the cover and the stator was covered in oil and the wire look fried like the got to hot. So is this stator supposed to be wet with oil? or is it a dry system?

Yes, it's somewhat wet with oil. Here's a pic of my fried stator from last month (you can see oil in the middle of the picture):

I got a lot of advice to replace the stator and regulator/rectifier at the same time, since one can affect the other.

Search "stator" here, and there's also a good thread from my experience here: Bay Area Riders Forum thread

Good luck!

if you can get your hands on a multi-meter that has an OHM meter and a DIODE mode I can walk you threw on how to trouble shoot the charging system. there is a way to bench test the regulator and the stator

Yeah my stator looks the same. Its even fried on the same coil. I am sure its the stator. My bike was almost stolen. The idiot was trying to hot wire and for some reason he was cutting the 3 wires that went to the stator. I didnt realize it till later and I think it grounded it out before i found that they were cut. Where is a good place to buy a stator online? Bike bandit wants like 300.

I bought from www.regulatorrectifier.com, the Stator was about $150, and the Reg/Rec was about $150.

The stator I bought looks like it was re-wound over a core from an old stator - I don't know if they did a better job than the factory or not. So far it's been OK.

definately test and or replace the regulator rectifier. they are notorious for developing corroded connections and melting wires on all models of bikes.
