Speedometer/odometer problems on a 636...

My best friend just got a 2004 Kawi 636. He got a really good deal on it, which means of course there are problems. The speedometer on his gauge won't read the first 2 digits. It goes to 9 on the singles place and then back to zero. We thought it was just a bad gauge cluster until he rode it a little more. This is where it gets weird... he got the bike with 3100 miles on it. He rode it around his neighborhood a little and now the odometer reads 3020ish. It's going backwards... I took the whole thing apart last night and checked all the connections. All the wiring seems to be in tact and the speed sensor is fine. I know this probably means that his bike does not have anywhere close to 3000 miles on it for real, but what would cause the odometer to read backwards? Will a new gauge cluster fix this problem? Any help or advice on this subject would be great.

You don't know what you can do until you know what you can't do...
