Smile PC3 interchangeable between 1st and 2nd gen?

Hi all,
As the title suggests:

Can a Power Commander 3 be interchangeable between these gens and if not, why? (I want to put one from a Gen 1 onto a Gen 2).

Sorry if it's been asked (I did search but couldn't find anything).

Thanks!
