K&N RACE Air filter

Hello Legends,

Brought a super stock 2012 Zx10r 2600 miles on the clock and I'm start to replace some of the goodies, went to my Kawa local bike shop to buy Race K&N air filter to be told I need to buy PCV and dyno bike before installing?.

All my other bikes had them but where installed by previous owners , therefore is what he is saying true?

An air filter isn't gonna require a tune. But to gain the most from it a tune might be needed. I wouldn't get a tune until I had an exhaust too. Then itd be worth it.

Exactly.

A damn air filter isn't gunna' net any gains. It'll maybe be a little more "throaty" sounding, and growl a little more...... but your ass dyno isn't gunna feel a difference.

If running a different exhaust and a K&N air filter, is it okay to use without a map or will it upset the mixture too much?

That air filter isnt going to make any impact on your AFR; before or after any other mods.

The Gen 4 ZX-10R is immune from the problems that high flow aftermarket air filters cause on many different models of bikes. Some bikes have resonance issues and or turbulence problems that cause hiccups in the fueling when too much air is introduced into the airbox, but I have not had any issues with any 2011+ ZX-10R

I remember reading that there was a difference between the K&N OE replacement and the K&N Race filter, but you shouldn't need a tune. Supposedly, the race version breathes easier but lets fine particles pass through.

I have Akrapovic end can but standard OEM air filter which needs replacing (Gen1 - 31K). Is it best to just get OEM replacement or K&N? I am not after extra BHP, but more better sound is good.

I have had the race filter installed for about 200miles now, I don't notice much if any difference, I have an M4 slip-on with no flash yet "waiting until the bike is inside for the winter" it bark some blue flame very frequently and is super loud but I wouldn't think that has much to do with the filter.
