How bad is it?

Vitals 05 ZX10R 20K miles with mods in signature...While out on a ride today the bike started to develop a noise and some performance issues. Some minor surging at cruise 70 in 6th. It sounds kind of like my car did when it was running with one of the spark plugs out of the hole. The noise seems to be coming from the top of the motor. Valve adjustment done at 13K. I limped it home. Oil looks fine and radiator overflow looks fine. No FI lights and the engine temp [email protected]

I'm guessing valve issues?

check your spark plugs, that would be a good start.I had a plug go out on me a couple of weeks ago and it sounded like the bike was blown up. Almost like I dropped a valve or something. But i would check that and your wiring conections to be safe. I have heard of the PCIII causing issues too. Start simple and work your way up

..that's what i was thinking too. a fouled plug will make the bike run like shit and sound horrible. could be the PC as well BUT i don't know if the PC was going bad that it would cause any engine noise? best of luck though man, sounds like she's well taken care of which is a good thing. hopefully something minor.

I went ahead and changed the plugs since I needed to inspect them...That was a fun 3 hour job. Anyways Bike is still not running right. It almost seems as if the timing isn't quite right but it's going to go to the shop.

Well the motor is torn down and the verdict is...I got somewhat lucky but it's still gonna cost me. This motor was not regularly redlined and only hit the limiter once on accel. It didn't drop a valve but was very close. Anyways some valve damage, 3 broken retainers, 3 damaged valve springs and 3 damaged buckets all on the intake side. Work to be performed and much of this is preventive maint.

1. tensioner
2. Head gasket
3 replace 8 intake valves
4. replace 3 valve springs
5. replace 16 valve guide seals
6. replace all retainers
7. replace all valve keepers
8. replace 3 intake buckets
9. shims
10. Cryo treat all parts

Ouch. Well when you get it back it will probably feel like brand new.
