Gen 4: 4th Gear Slipping

Now I know when a bike starts to slip its time to change the fibers and plates. But this bike was purchased christmas of 2011. With only 5000 miles on it 4th gear starts to slip when I fully open the throttle and around 8000rpm. It does not do it if I gradually pick up speed. It is time for an oil change.

My question is should I take it to the shop to see if the warrenty will take care of it or should I just take check out the clutch fibers and plates and change the oil?

The clutch is a wear item and not covered under the warranty unless there's a serious issue with it like a clutch basket problem or it doesn't work at all. Most likely, a slipping clutch on a 5,000 mile bike would get denied for warranty replacement. That said, you may ask your dealer and see, just don't expect much.

Have you checked the clutch adjustment? Do you have the proper freeplay at the clutch lever? What oil is in there now? How often was it changed? How is the bike ridden (i.e.- dragged, raced, stunted, etc)?

Best bet is to try the dealer for warranty work. When that doesn't work, open the motor up and replace the fiber plates. It's pretty cheap and easy to do that yourself. An oil change alone isn't going to magically correct the problem of a slipping clutch.

I may not be perfect, but at least I don't ride a Suzuki.
