Question Engine Parts Swap for Full Race Engine

I am new to this board and was VERY impressed with the amount of knowledge it gives you access to so I thought I would try a post!!!


I have a 2007 Zx10r engine we are building for full race trim on a budget. I have a 2008 (Gen 3 Engine) with a hole in the case I can use for parts.

My questions are as follows:
Would it be beneficial to use the head, throtle bodies or cam from the 08 engine?
Should I put the 08 intake race cam in the engine? (would have to order)
Should i use the 04 exaust cam as well?
Thin head gasket?

The racing this engine will be used for bottom end is not an issue, We run from about 10K to the rev limiter.

Just trying to get a feel for what I should do with what I have and some other inexpensive parts?

deck the 08 head, get a .50 headgasket, use an 08 intake cam, an 07 exhaust cam, 07 airbox with 4 injectors and that's as cheap as it gets. Use the rest of the budget to get it tuned.

How much can you take off the head?
Should I swap cranks as well, I was told the 08 crank is a lot lighter.
So I should run the 08 4 injector set up as well?

Any rough ideas on hp gains with those mods?

you'll have to measure the squish between the piston and head with .50 head gasket and you'll know exactly how much to take off the head. The 08 crank is 2lbs lighter over 2nd gen crank, up to you if you want to swap it or not. You can try 08 injectors, but 2nd gen injectors will handle whatever power that you're going to make just fine. I can't tell you how much power that you're going to get until I know what degree #s that you're going to run along with the exhaust system and how you going to get her tuned. Either way she'll make more power, these motors like more compression.

I assume the two pounds I would lose in rotating mass by swapping the crank would be worth the work. Do you know if the 08 crank will drop in?

This engine will be in a car kit so I am not sure how we will tune it, any advice?

The exhaust will be a custom header with hyabusa muffler.

keep the heavier crank in the car application, u will need the inertia. .015-.020 off the head with thin hg as stated, quench should be .026-.028.

What are my best cam options with the 08 head?
08 intake race cam and 04 stock exhaust cam???

what tc9 said, keep lobe centers moderate for torque with weight u are moving, it wont run out of steam up top.

08 crank will drop in 2nd gen cases, but I would keep the heavier crank since you're putting the engine in a car. I'd recomend getting it tuned with a stand alone efi, second best option is race ecu, and third pc3/5 or bazzaz

Where would I find the stand alone efi or race ecu?
Which cams would be recommended for the car application.
FYI car weight 1200 lbs
