Another sprocket thread

Hi All,

I have an 04 ZX-10R and it is still STOCK as far as sprockets and chain. I'm looking forward to change my sprockets for a better setup on the track.

FRONT: One of the recommendations is to go from 17 to 16 with the stock Z1000. I guess this would increase my wheelbase. Will this fit with my stock chain?

REAR: What is the stock sprocket? 40? I guess the recommendation is 42. If I leave the front sprocket STOCK, will the stock chain be long enough for the 42 rear?

Like cling says.

Its a balance on how many shifts you need to make and how many gears you need.

For instance the stock gearing would probably see you topping out in 4th at Barber and most of the corners are 2nd gear, meaning less shifts and less time rolling rather than accelerating.

Too many shifts can slow you down , its too late in the evening for me to calculate but if a shift takes a tenth of a second you are coasting for a tenth and not accelerating and at higher speeds that is a lot of track.

But on the other hand your shift drops need to keep you in the power band and you dont want to lug the bike either.

Okay. The track is Calabogie in Canada (www.calabogiemotorsports.com) It just opened last fall and is probably the nicest in Canada. I am going back there with Team Promotion this week-end.

Whatever setting I should use for this track, can somebody tell me if a 42T rear will require me to modify / change my stock chain?

As far as Calabogie track itself, I use gears 1-2-3 so it is a fairly slow track. I use my bike for street as well so I'd prefer keep the front sprocket stock. I have 2 sets of wheels. The one for street will have stock rear.

I just looked at the track , nice circuit but smaller than it appears , the front straight coming out of the kink is only 500 metres.

There are a couple of first gear corners and a bunch of 2nds.

I would try this, get your gear ratio set so you are exiting the 1st gear corners with enough room to shift to 2nd after corner exit and see how long you can stretch 3rd, you want to be accelerating hard in 3rd until turn in ,so third would still have to be getting towards peak RPM's.

If for some reason you top out in third and have to do a short burst in 4th you will lose time so you need to lower the gearing, if you are lugging the engine in the first gear corners then shorten up the gearing and spend more time accelerating in 4th on the straight.If you are not lugging in 1st then I would raise the gearing so you dont clip 4th on the straight.

Looks like a three gear Ducati track or a four gear Kawasaki track , I would try 16 t in the front.

Will a 16T front spread the wheelbase much with the stock chain? Will I notice it in the handling?

It wont make a lot of difference to the wheelbase, and track riding I always use more slack in the chain because of the amount of rear compression you get in the corners.

I would just replace the front sprocket and leave the rear spindle where it is for starters, you can always start pulling the axle back as a running change, it may help you out with the lower gearing in regards to lifting the front wheel.
