520 Chain Conversion suggestions?

I am mulling over a 520 conversion on my 04 10R. I am looking for input on the cons as well as pros. I know if I do the conversion I will be able to chain the final gearing. I am leaning toward one tooth smaller on the front and one larger on the rear.

Also, if I do it, what tools will I need besides normal tools (breaker bar, torque wrench, socket sizes...).

Most of the 520 conversions come with an aluminium rear sprocket , some are hard anodized others arent, either way the ali sprocket wont last as long as a steel one.

There are aftermarket alloy sprockets with steel outer rings, but they are expensive.

a 16/39 setup is pretty common amongst members for street use and still be able to reach 179-180 if that interests you.

using a 112L chain is also fairly common when installing a new setup so the wheelbase gets extended about 20mm and adds stability at higher speeds.
You'll want a chain tool capable of removing the OEM rivet as well as peening the new mstr link in place.

Thanks for the reply. I figured on getting the Motion Pro chain breaker kit Part # 08-0066. Will this be all that I will need to deal with the chain. As for sprockets, I am leaning toward a 16/41 combo to give me a 2:56 final. Your thoughts?

I understand that a longer wheel base tends to add stability, but I am not clear on what you mean by a 112L chain.

Thanks for your input. I understand that the aluminum sprockets won't last as long. I can accept that. I will probably go with one of the hard anodized ones.

The OEM chain on the 04,5 10 is 110 links and it will work fine with your new 16/40 setup but a 112 link chain is what many have converted to when doing this, not necessary mind you but an option.

Thanks. I have an 04, but I think it is still stock at 17/40. Is this correct?
