So after rushing to get my bike fixed up after a lowside a few weeks ago I was off to Iowa to Mid-America Motorplex. Never been to the track before but was very excited. So after rollin in on friday night after a 10 hour drive I got to endure some pretty nasty severe t-storms with hail, wind and plenty of rain.
Thank goodness I did not have a race on saturday but I was hoping to get a few practice sessions in to learn the track. Well it rained until noon and I finally got out on a pretty dry track at about 3:30. The track is very bumpy and is torn up a bit but very fun and very technical. http://www.midamericamotorplex.com/2006/rc_maps.asp#
Thanks to the kind corner workers they let us do sessions until 7:00 which allowed me to get 4 sessions in which was better than nothing.
So I had one practice session on saturday morning and that felt a bit better so I had 4 races for sunday. The temps were in the mid 90's with a 20-35mph wind.
Race#1-(GTO) So the first race is supposed to be a 25 minute race or about a 15 lap race. Got a decent start but had to get by a few slower dudes on the first lap and lost the leaders but was in 4th. Thats where I stayed but I was gaining on 3rd and could tell he was getting tired. But of course the race was red flagged with only 7 laps completed so 4th it was. My best finish yet so I was pleased.
Race#2-(Ulim.Supersport) So the second race I got a horrid start and went into T1 in like 8th place. Not really much to speak of this race but passed a few guys and made it up to 5th but by that time the leaders had checked out.
Race#3-(Unlim.GP(Money Race)) Being one of the only amateur money races offered you get a bigger grid with some pretty good riders. I just didnt quite feel like I pushed it enough but finished a solid 8th out of about 23 guys. And since they pay up to 10th I won a little money.....very little but enough to cover the race registration so I'll take it.
Race#4-(Unlim.Superbike) Last race of the day and the track was starting to feel a bit more friendly to me. Smaller grid(15) but a little tougher than some of the other classes. Got an ok start but entered T1 in 8th but in T3 I passed 3 dudes on the inside which was a ton of fun for sure. I was able to chase down 4th place and pass him shortly there after and thats where I stayed and finished. I was very pleased with that result as the top 2 guys in that class were running top 5 expert pace and from the second was passed a bunch of experts and were 4th and 5th overall.
So no crashes and decent results so I was pretty pleased with this w/e for sure. Now I just need to put my head down and work on braking later and getting ont he gas a little sooner on slow corners.
I will try to get a few pics up later but I dont have a ton.
Next race: Rnd#4 June 10-11th Blackhawk Farms Raceway
